How to deal with spills in hospitals safety?
All staff members need to be familiar with the practice’s policy and procedure for managing blood and
body substance spills. They should be managed promptly to reduce the potential for contact with other
patients or staff or visitors and minimize damage to surface materials. Spots or drops of blood or other
small spills (up to 10 cm) can easily be managed by wiping the area immediately with paper towels, and
then cleaning with warm water and detergent, followed by rinsing and drying the area. Dry the area, as
wet areas attract contaminants. Health services should have management systems in place for dealing
with blood and body substance spills. Protocols should be included in procedural manuals, and
emphasized in ongoing education or training programs.
The basic principles of blood and body fluid/substance spills management are:
standard precautions apply including:
1- use of personal protective equipment (PPE), as applicable.
2- spills should be cleared up before the area is cleaned (adding cleaning liquids to spills increases the
size of the spill and should be avoided).
3-the management of spills should be flexible enough to cope with different types of spills, taking into
account the following factors:-
- the nature (type) of the spill (for example, sputum, vomit, faces, urine, blood or laboratory culture)
- the pathogens most likely to be involved in these different types of spills – for example, stool samples
may contain viruses, bacteria or protozoan pathogens, whereas sputum may contain Mycobacterium
tuberculosis.
- the size of the spill – for example, spot (few drops), small (10cm) 10>.
- the type of surface – for example, carpet or impervious flooring .
- the location involved – that is, whether the spill occurs in a contained area (such as a microbiology
laboratory), or in a public or clinical area of a health service, in a public location or within a
community premises.
Cleaning spills – equipment
Standard cleaning equipment, including a Towels, cleaning bucket and cleaning agents, should be readily
available for spills management. It should also be stored in an area known to all. This is particularly
important in clinical areas. To help manage spills in areas where cleaning materials may not be readily ,
- a disposable ‘spills kit’ could be used, containing a large (10 L) reusable plastic container or bucket
with fitted lid, containing the following items:
- appropriate leak-proof bags and containers for disposal of waste material designated ,Towels ,about
five sachets of a granular formulation containing 10,000 ppm available chlorine or equivalent (each
sachet should contain sufficient granules to cover a 10-cm diameter spill),disposable rubber gloves
suitable for cleaning ,eye protection (disposable or reusable),a plastic apron ,respiratory protection
device, for protection against inhalation of powder from the disinfectant granules or aerosols (which
may be generated from high-risk spills during the cleaning process).

for preventing aerosols. A scraper and pan should be used to remove the absorbed material.

How to deal with patient's utilities from beeding and textiles?
Textiles ate involved blankets, towels, personal clothing, patient apparel, uniforms,
gowns, drapes for surgical procedures.
Contaminated textiles and fabrics often contain high numbers of microorganisms from
body substances, including blood, skin, stool, urine, vomitus, and other body tissues and
fluids. Although contaminated textiles in healthcare facilities can be a source of
substantial numbers of pathogenic microorganisms.
Simply put, once textiles are removed from a clean-linen cart or storage room and taken
into a patient room, they are considered contaminated.
Here are How to deal :
1- Never carry clean or soiled textiles against a uniform. One never knows what
contaminants are on a uniform, and bacteria will transfer.
2- Never carry clean or contaminated textiles cradled in unclothed arms, for the same
reason — bacterial transfer.
3- Wear gloves and carry only what can be carried safely.
4- Never storage clean textiles outside of a room or on a shelf outside of a room.
5- Always ensure that clean textiles are stored on shelving units that are covered; even
in clean storage rooms.
Cleaning in general has two main functions:
first: non-microbiological, to improve or restore appearance, and prevent deterioration.
Second: microbiological, to reduce the numbers of microbes microorganisms on hospital
textiles are: Gram negative bacteria, coagulase negative staphylococci, Bacillus sp. and
typical skin flora.
Define sterilization? Types?
Sterilization refers to any process that effectively kills
or eliminates transmissible agents (such as fungi,
bacteria, viruses, spore forms, etc.) from a surface,
equipment, article of food or medication
