An assembly edit is the first stage of the editorial process where the editor decides the order of all video clips to match the storyboard, without cutting clips to their final length or adding effects. It allows the editor to see the basic structure of the film and identify any changes or re-recordings needed to fix continuity errors or other problems, establishing the foundational structure before fine-tuning the edit.
