What is the purpose of a magazine?
• The purpose of the magazine is to intrigue the audience into
wanting to buy the magazine because of its attention seeking
looks. The looks of it makes the magazine is to pull the
audience in to buying them.
• They exist because it’s the way of the social media pulling in
the audience to buying the products that the institution is
selling to the audience.
• The film marketing uses magazines as a way to make the
product that they are selling sound worth while watching , it
makes them gain a wider range of a mass audience.
Where are film magazine available?
• Film magazines are available in super
markets, corner shops, book stores etc.
• Anywhere where customers go regularly.
What is the typical size for a
magazine?
• The standard size for a magazine is:
8 3/8’’ x 10 7/8
• That is the typical size of a physical magazine
copy. However, the sizes of electronic devices
will vary.
How are the magazine covers
appealing/attractive to the audience?
• They can sometimes make the magazines look very colourful
depending on what the main storyline of the magazine is.
• For example if the cover magazine was about an action films
the colour pallets would be indicating danger such as, blacks,
reds and yellow. All depends on what is on the front cover of
the magazine.
• If the main image on the front of the magazine is bold and
stands out it makes the audience want to buy that magazine
making the magazine successful in portraying a
attractive/appealing look.
• The magazine look is targeted at the primary audience of the
institution but however it also attracts the secondary
audience gaining the institution a wider range of a mass
audience.
What are the conventions of a
magazine cover?
• The conventions of a magazine is that the front over of the magazine will
be the newest and most up to date movie out. It helps the institution be
successful with the newest product that they have released.
• They also use a colour pallet based on the genre of the movie or the
subject. Eg: if it’s a Sci-fi movie the colour pallet of the front cover will be
mostly in blue to emphasise the futuristic feel of the genre.
• They will always have a barcode but they will always place it where its not
distracting from the rest of the magazine.
• The mast head will always be in the colour that falls in line with the genre.
For instance, if it were an action genre it mostly be in red to evoke a
dangerous feel.
• The gaze will always be direct audience as if trying to lure the audience
into buying the magazine.
• The price will be in small near the barcode.
Similarities and differences between
the magazines.
• Magazines will have different fonts in order to
portray its main themes.
• Like a gossip magazine will have a very colourful
and childish chunky font to it.
• A fashion magazine like Elle will have a more
elegant and coloured mast head.
• An empire magazine will have a very bold, sharp
and strong colour pallet to the mast head.
• The little white lies magazine will have a very
unique main image where is looks very artistic
with no straplines to it.
What do some magazine covers
priorities?
• Some magazines priorities the main image of the
front cover because that’s what mainly attractive
the audience into buying the magazine.
• The also priorities the latest things so the
audience feel as if it benefits them if they buy
that magazine.
• They also priorities the colour pallet of the
magazine so that it looks very attractive but yet
not take the attention away from the main image
of the magazine (which is what attracts the
audience into buying the magazine).
Explain how a magazine cover
challenges conventions
• Mostly magazine covers will have a lot of
straplines to talk about the most latest things
inside the magazine. However, some magazines
can have just the mast head and the main image
to escalate the audiences curiosity.
• By doing so it makes the magazine look very
attractive and focuses more on the main image
rather than suffocating it with various texts
surrounding it.
