Introduction
Broodstock, or broodfish are a group of mature individuals used in aquaculture for breeding
purposes. A hatchery is a place where eggs are hatched under artificial conditions.
As part of our course “Broodstock and Hatchery Management” on 14 February,2024, an insightful
study tour commenced at 9:30 AM, led by our respected teachers, Dr. Mahmudul Hasan, Md.
Mokhlasur Rahman, and our beloved chairman Mohammad Rafiqul Bari sir from the
Department of Fisheries. The purpose of the tour was to visit Zohurul Fish Farm, a prominent
fish farm located in the Jamalpur district. This excursion was organized by the Dept. of Fisheries
of Bangamata Sheikh Fojilatunnesa Mujib Science and Technology University in Jamalpur,
further enhancing our academic knowledge and practical understanding.
During this study tour, our focus was on the intriguing subject of "Broodstock and Hatchery
Management". This hands-on experience enriched our theoretical knowledge, providing us with
valuable real-world perspectives.
Objectives
• The study tour to Zohurul Fish Farm aimed to provide an objective understanding of
broodstock management processes done in the farm.
Discussion
A good broodstock management system consider the following measures:
1. Sources of broodfish
2. Selection of broodfish
3. Collection of broodfish
4. Rearing of broodfish
3 | P a g e
Here are some general guidelines for rearing of broodfish followed by Zohurul Fish Farm:
a) Location: Choose a suitable location for the pond that is close to a water source and has
good drainage.
b) Size and shape: Decide on the size and shape of the pond based on its intended use and
the available space. Rectangular ponds are commonly used in Bangladesh.
c) Excavation: Excavate the pond area to the desired depth and shape. Use the excavated soil
to construct an embankment around the pond to prevent water seepage.
d) Lining: Line the pond with a layer of clay or bentonite to prevent water leakage.
e) Inlet and outlet: Provide an inlet for filling the pond with water and an outlet for draining
excess water.
f) Water supply: Ensure a reliable water supply for the pond, such as a nearby river or well.
g) Aeration: Consider installing aeration systems to promote oxygen exchange and prevent
algae growth.
h) Fish stocking: If using the pond for fish farming, stock the pond with appropriate fish
species and ensure proper feeding and maintenance.
i) Maintenance: Regularly maintain the pond by removing debris, controlling weeds and
algae growth, and monitoring water quality.
Renu Procedure:
A fish begins to spawn from the age of 3 years. Hormones are pushed every March for spawning.
Three ponds were injected one day per week before 21 days of injection. Fishing starts at 12 PM
for conditioning and dosing starts at 10 PM. Half the male dose is given to the female (half the cc
dose is given to the male if 1 cc is given to the female).
Some advanced medicines have launched into the market which can be provided as same amount
to both male and female fish.
4 | P a g e
➢ Spawning Age: The fish begins to spawn from the age of 3 years. This means that once
the fish reaches the age of 3, it becomes sexually mature and capable of reproducing.
➢ Hormone Injections: To induce spawning, hormones are administered to the fish.
According to information hormone injections occur every March.
➢ Injection Schedule: Three ponds are being injected, one day per week, before 21 days of
injection. This implies that the hormone injections are administered once a week for three
consecutive weeks, starting 21 days before the expected spawning period.
➢ Fishing Conditioning: Fishing starts at 12 PM for conditioning. This suggests that before
the hormone injections, the fish undergo a conditioning period that prepares them for
spawning. The purpose of this conditioning phase may vary depending on the specific fish
species and breeding program.
➢ Dosing Timing: The dosing process begins at 10 PM. This likely refers to the
administration of the hormones to the fish. The reason for conducting the dosing at this
particular time is not specified.
➢ Male and Female Doses: According to Mr. Parvej’s information, the male fish receive
half the dose and the female fish receive the full dose. Similarly, if 1 cc is given to the
female, the male receives half a cc. This dosage practice suggests a specific ratio or
proportionality between the male and female fish when it comes to hormone administration.
➢ Dose Names: Mr. Parvej mentioned "Ovohom," "Ovopin," and "Yon" as the names of
the hormone doses.
Ovulation Timing:
Ovulation, the release of eggs from the female fish, typically occurs between three hours and
seven to eight hours after the hormone injection. This indicates the approximate timeframe within
which the fish's reproductive process is initiated after the administration of hormones.

Overview:
The study tour to Zohurul Fish Farm was a testament to our university’s commitment to providing
us with holistic and practical education. It not only bridged the gap between theory and practice
but also instilled in us a passion for exploring innovative approaches towards broodstock and
hatchery management system.

Conclusion:
The study tour of Zohurul Fish Farm made a connection between our academic knowledge and
the practical implementation of this knowledge. Though the study tour was short, it was a
significant knowledge-based tour. We have come in contact with fish processors in the real world,
which will make us more professional in this sector in the future.
Acknowledgment:
I would like to say thanks to Bangamata Sheikh Fajilatunnesa Mujib Science and Technology
University's Department of Fisheries for organizing such an effective study excursion. Also, I
would like to give thanks to the educators in this department, especially Dr. Mahmudul Hasan,
Md Mokhlasur Rahman, and Mohammad Rafiqul Bari for their excellent advice. We would
especially want to thank Mr. Parvej from Zohurul Fish Farm for guiding us all through that fish
farm system. Finally, a big thanks to all of our classmates for helping to make this study tour a
success.
