This document compares maps of uninsured populations to minority populations in California counties. Several counties with the highest percentages of Black and Hispanic residents also had large percentages of uninsured residents. However, the counties with the highest percentages of uninsured residents did not always correspond to those with large minority populations. The correlation was stronger between uninsured and Hispanic populations than between uninsured and Black populations. Additional factors like employment rates should be examined due to the lack of a perfect correlation.

Uninsured Population Compared to Minority Populations in California • There is an obvious correlation between the two maps depicting the counties with the largest Black and Hispanic populations. • Several of the counties with the highest percentage minority populations also have a large percentage of the population uninsured. • The counties with the highest percentage of uninsured persons do not necessarily correspond to counties with a large minority population. • There is a stronger correlation between the uninsured map and the map of the Hispanic population, than there is between the uninsured map and the map of the Black population. • Due to the lack of a strong correlation between uninsured and minority populations, it would be useful to look at additional factors, such as the employment rate.
