Quantum Core
Mining
Asteroid Mining: A Cosmic Query
Our goal is to mine asteroids for
resources and bring them back to
earth for better economic growth and
welfare.
Target Asteroid Module:
01 Resources
02 Proximity to Delivery Site
03 Velocity between Orbits
04 Optimal Size
05 Capture and Return
06 Orbital Period
Resources
QCore mining will focus
on high value metals such
as PGM’s(platinum group
metals) such as platinum,
rhodium etc. PGM’s can be
used for various industries
such as the tech industry
and also the medical
industry. Another common
focus will include metallic
elements such as iron and
nickel which are also
extremely needed.
Optimal Size
Although our company
strives to range in
different sizes, the most
optimal decision would be
medium sized asteroids
since they are substantial
enough to carry useful
resources and also
proficient for efficient
landing, retrieval and
extraction projects.
Proximity to Delivery Site
QCore mining plans to
target NEA’s(near Earth
Metals), so it requires a
short travel time and cost
efficient
probabilities.These sites
could include near the
planets earth and mars.
Velocity between Orbits
The velocity of the
asteroid should likely be
proportional or efficient
relative to the earth's
orbit. This ensures the
reduction of fuel and
energy consumption as it
focuses on the efficiency
regarding the return of the
spaceship. Our aerospace
scientists constantly
update the best time for
optimization in these
missions regarding
velocity
Capture and Return
Our team constantly
works on analyzing the
size composition and the
structure so that we can
ensure a successful
retrieval. Although this is
a complicated task our
team constantly
researches new
approaches for a more
advanced future.
Orbital Period
The team involving
astronomers and project
planners will constantly
measure the orbital
periods and the trajectory
of the targeted asteroid
when in favor relative to
earth. This guarantees the
knowledge of forecast
uncertainty and time
discrepancies.
Example Asteroid
1685 Toro
An S Spectral Class Asteroid!
● An Ideal targeted asteroid for QCore is an asteroid that tends to be in the S
Spectral Class. A good example of QCore’s targeted asteroid is the 1685 Toro.
This asteroid found in the JPL Small-Body Database seems to be a good
contender. With an orbital period of 1.6 which is approximately 584 days. It is an
excellent NEO as it orbits the sun and is simultaneously a mars crosser. S class
asteroids are very valuable for metallic elements as they usually tend to have
metals like nickel and iron which are very useful for contending resources.
●
● This asteroid also shows 5:8 resonance with earth which means the orbital
periods and velocity will be in favor of earth. Its orbital uncertainty is at a value
of 0 which means there is a high chance of its orbit and close approaches
relative to earth in the near future.
●
Required Tech
The technology to ensure
successful asteroid mining is
still in the early stages as
there isn't foolproof
technology yet. This is an
upcoming industry that will
have many approaches to look
into.
The development of the technology needed
for this field would require energy efficient
machinery such as solar powered devices
which are under the making. The usage of
robotic equipment is also necessary and is
under process as every mission can't be a
manned mission as it needs to be as efficient
as possible.
currently available? being developed?
being developed?
Required Tech
New technologies that could be a success could
happen to be new machinery or concepts that are
still in progress. Since this field is new why not
work with new concepts and upcoming
technologies. With the name QCore we care about
the core of the asteroids and what resources it can
bring us. Quantum technology, if advanced
enough, could be used in space for a better future.
Could be invented?
being developed?
Estimated Budget
1kg into Space: In 2017, the project that included the transportation of a single kilogram of water
into space via the Space Shuttle to the International Space Station (ISS) was approximately $272,000,
as per findings from a study.
Launch a probe: The cost of launching a probe can vary based on the requirements of the probe
depending on size, complexity in build, final destination and retrieval technology. However, the
average probe cost including all the requirements can range from 2.3 billion to 2.7 billion.
Space X Falcon: Since SpaceX's Falcon rockets, such as the Falcon 9, are reusable, the cost of space
launch has decreased. After being repaired, the initial section of the Falcon 9 can land on Earth as it
launches and be used again. They can launch more frequently and save money thanks to its
reusability. Reusable spacecraft have demonstrated their effectiveness by landing and reusing Falcon
9 rockets several times in November 2021.
Value :The value of mined minerals can be very useful for the economy as it is our chance to get an
abundance of materials we can use such as precious metals. Especially in this environment where
resources are scarce. Mining asteroids can also help us advance in the long run as it can be a source of
possibility for colonization and living conditions such as trapped water or new elements.
political, economic and environmental consequences of asteroid mining
United Nations Outer Space Treaty
The United Nations Outer Space Treaty is basically a rules and regulations
contract for space missions. It helps prevent problems but create solutions
instead. It sets guidelines for every country involved in space exploration. It
suggests that space is no one's property and should be used equally and promote
peace rather than harmful dangers.
Ownership
According to the United Nations Outer Space Treaty , no one can “own” asteroids
or comets. They are considered part of the universe that cannot be claimed, their
resources are free for all and cant be split for ownership.
Environmental concerns
Bringing such materials to earth can uphold many risks;
Alien resources: this may be a good thing in certain circumstances however,
if an alien organism is found in the asteroid that is potentially dangerous for
humans that could be a big issue.
Recycling: With the introduction of space minerals and resources we need to
find a new way to reduce and recycle so there isn't much waste damage on
earth.
Energy usage: The energy usage is a significant amount as there is a lot of
energy and fuel going in and out for these space missions. We need to
mitigate climate effects from the use of such vast energy resources as well.
Thank You!
