- 2. WHAT IS FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE? Figurative language is Similes, Metaphors, Personification, Hyperboles, and Idioms. They are figures of speech. Example of a Simile : The boy ran as fast as lightning. Example of a Metaphor : The sound of the basketball players feet were thunder to my ears. Example of Personification : The chocolate cake was calling my name and begging me to eat it. Example of a Hyperbole : The test was taking me forever to finish. Example of an Idiom : I am the apple of my parents eye.
- 3. WHAT ARE SIMILES? Similes are a comparison of two things using like or as. Example : The stars twinkled like diamonds in the night sky. That means that the stars in the night sky were shining beautifully.
- 4. WHAT ARE METAPHORS? Metaphors are a comparison two or more unlike things without using like or as. Example : My room was a tornado that desperately needed cleaning. That means the child’s room was a really bad mess and he needed to clean it.
- 5. WHAT ARE HYPERBOLES? Hyperboles are extreme exaggeration. Example : School was taking forever to finish. That means that the test was taking the person along time to finish.
- 6. WHAT ARE IDIOMS? Idioms are common phrases that doesn’t mean what it says. Example: Let the cat out of the bag. That means to tell a secret like in this picture.
