A 2003 UK study called Project Phoenix identified 4 groups in terms of music interest: savants for whom music is central to life, enthusiasts for whom music is a key part but balanced, casuals for whom music plays a role but other things are more important, and indifferents who would not miss music. The band aimed to appeal to savants, enthusiasts, and casuals but not indifferents. They targeted 16-25 year olds who have disposable income from jobs or university and secondarily younger girls who collect posters and replay albums.
