What is Autism Spectrum Disorder? Disorder Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)  noun Definition A broad term which serves as an umbrella for a group of terms used to define complex disorders of the brain (Autismspeaks.org).  Each of these disorders has “autistic-like” symptoms and characteristics and autism is one disorder within the spectrum.

Autism Characteristics and Reactions All of these behaviors  can affect academic performance, as communication  is essential to learning and many of these behaviors affect or hinder communication.
‘ Cornerstone’ for advancement in Schools Source:  ("U.S. department of," 2008) Cornerstone Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 (IDEA)  Federal Law Defined IDEA is a law ensuring services to children with disabilities throughout the nation. IDEA governs how states and public agencies provide early intervention, special education and related services to more than 6.5 million eligible infants, toddlers, children and youth with disabilities.
Autism  Incidence in School Setting “ Perception” Reality More children are diagnosed than in the past, however, the prevalence is about  one percent  of school population and most general education teachers  do not receive  the opportunity to teach a child diagnosed with ASD. Autism Academic Approaches ASD Children learn and communicate differently It is  critical  we look at alternative approaches… Source:  ("How students with," 2011) Extend WELCOME to all students Identify and use the right COMMUNICATION platform(s) Develop PREDICTABLE routines Understand BEHAVIOR is form of communication Use VISUALS to convey communication Consider CLASSROOM AID to help Encourage “PEER MENTORING” Focus on STRENGTHS and areas of INTEREST Be CREATIVE in lesson plans Provide frequent and positive MOTIVATORS Promote INDEPENDENCE when tasks mastered Consider all SENSORY stimulations ASSIST student when they need help (don’t ‘do them’) Allow EXTRA TIME to child Remove CLUTTER from room Try to use NATURAL LIGHTING in classroom Consider PHYSICAL PLACEMENT of where child sits Do not ACCEPT INFORMATION when child is not ‘coping’ Treat student the SAME as other students Empower student to be ACTIVE in classroom

Lets look at an iPad Application Proloquo  (created by Assistive Wave) Proloquo is a  visual  app Focused on delivering alternative communication solutions for people with difficulty speaking Over 7,000 vocabulary items Ability to customize with familiar images Promotes universal access to the curriculum as well as the life of the school. Applications Transform Tactile to Auditory The MyVoice Application enables a user on an iPad to type auditory messages and play them on an iPad when needed, see  LINK . This is transformative….
