Learn how to integrate analytics software with Autodesk products
to improve project visibility and communicate progress, issues
and accomplishments to project stakeholders.
This instructional demo provides attendees the opportunity to
learn about data integration and analytics modeling using industry
leading tools (like Tableau and Splunk).
This class highlights proven approaches to design and integrate
analytics into a project and demonstrates how stakeholders have
the ability to view charts and trends including the ability to drill
down into project data to identify challenge areas and apply
corrective actions to improve the likelihood of a successful project
outcome.

Editor's Notes

  • #3: RICH: Our class aims to present our POV on analytics and how we integrate analytics with Autodesk solutions. We share our love of Data and how we practically apply analytics solutions to solve real challenges. Real project examples will be discussed and demonstrations of Tableau and Splunk on the agenda
  • #4: RICH: Welcome to our Analytics course. Before we get started let’s begin with introductions.
  • #5: Eddy: [Introduce yourself and turn over to Renad]
  • #6: RENAD: [Introduce yourself and turn over to Tim]
  • #7: TIM: [Introduce yourself and turn over to Rich]
  • #8: RICH: Introduce myself
  • #9: RICH: As far as those in the audience, as you can see we have a mix of construction, engineering, architecture, imaging and IT representation in the room from 6 countries.
  • #10: RICH Walk through the objectives
  • #11: RICH
  • #12: RICH We will cover the basics, with a blend of the “art of the possible” to inspire the group and recognize how to integrate the latest analytics tools with what’s going on in your backyard We start by articulating some shared challenges across industries Many organization use “best of breed” applications to support their business needs Most applications create silioed or isolated data stores Those data stores are larger now, more than ever Interactive dashboards are needed to tell an “enterprise story” – identifying trends and providing a integrated visualization needed to make decisions and apply corrective actions
  • #13: RICH An integration framework can be used as a reference to help craft an integrate analytics solution [walk though the framework layers] Presentation – dashboards, statics and dynamic reports, mobile access and alerts There is a transformation layer that can direct or combine data sources Data sources can be many, including application data, financial data, project data, and data from public sources like the internet We will use this framework later when we look at some real-life examples
  • #14: RICH As you can see there are many tools that support a number of different categories We will dive a little deeper in the two slices highlighted; Reporting Visualization and Data Management Leading tools in these 2 areas are Tableau and Splunk Remember there is no right or wrong tool – these are just “hammers” – however there are tools that may be able to do a specific job better, easier, or cheaper than others. Empower org to obtain quick wins
  • #15: RICH Tableau and Splunk are Leaders in the Visualization and Data Management domains, according to Gartner’s Magic Quadrant
  • #16: RICH [walk through advantages and disadvantages]
  • #17: RICH Now we will walk through a few real-life examples There is a program management, enterprise dashboard, and Revit health check example Then we will see an interactive demo of the Revit Health check
  • #18: RICH The first example is a program Management Dashboard This dashboard was developed for a large quasi-federal organization Executive leadership needed to know at a high level where their projects were (status and headlines) and what the current issues, risks, and testing trends looked like
  • #19: RICH The solution provided a Tableau dashboard that integrated different data sources to produce a single program-wide interactive dashboard Visuals started simple with the current headlines and status, and dove deeper to include a high-level Gantt, Testing progress and defect trends Design and Font size took into consideration the executive stakeholders in the room – and they appreciated it. Additionally we were able to address questions from the executive team real-time as the dashboard was interactive and we could drill down into the data
  • #20: RICH This example addresses a need to provide a dashboard to visualize a Revit Health Check A visualization was needed to quickly identify challenge areas and apply needed corrective actions
  • #21: RICH Many visuals and trends were developed to help the Revit Manager understand compliance to standards, number of errors and warnings, and whether file sizes were within normal parameters Tableau was used to visualize the data contained in the Revit Application, Excel spread sheets, and other data sources to provide an integrate dashboard view Now let’s look at the Tableau demo of this health check
  • #22: RICH Launch Tableau and walk them through the demo Show some inner Tableau UI components After demo, turn over to TIM
  • #23: RICH First with any analytics solution – you need data! Tableau supports many connectors “out of the box” You can preview and create SQL (visual) queries You can attach “Live” or real-time or Extract the data into a local repository (better performance for larger data sets)
  • #24: RICH Dimensions – think of dimensions as the categories or main drivers of data (i.e., file names, industry, employees, etc.) Measures – measures are more of the values, results, measurements of the data (i.e., file sizes, sales amounts, etc.) Parameters – these are user defined and used to create calculation or define pre-set parameters that can be used to filter data or allow the user to change a view of the data Row and Column Shelves – these areas allow the user to drag a dimension or measure to allow Tableau to create a visual representation based on the type of view selected (under Show Me) Filters – Allows the user to filter the dataset Marks – Allows the user to define the details of the data being displayed in the worksheet Show Me – changes the type of data visualization.
  • #25: RICH Dashboard Selection – Available worksheets that can be included in the dashboard Dashboard Containers – These are visual “buckets” that allow the user to design and craft the dashboard view Dashboard Sizing – Defines the size of the dashboard Placed Dashboard – Resting place of the placed worksheet. Many worksheets can be placed into a single dashboard. Actions can be configured to control worksheet data when the user interacts with the dashboard by clicking or hovering. Legend or Quick Filter – legends and filters can be added to allow the user to control the data being displayed in the view.

  • #43: RICH Tableau Server allows a user to publish a dashboard to the cloud Dashboard can be selected here – searching available by tags, recent, or favorite
  • #44: RICH This is the overview of the Revit Health Check Used for navigation and displays a radial that immediately conveys challenge areas (in this case Revit file sizes that seem rather large and should be investigated) The Radial can be toggled to show other dimensions of Revit Families (i.e., Size and Time to Open)
  • #45: RICH Project File Statistics provides dashboard information pertaining to File Sizes (Compact Size, File Size, Purged Size) It also provides a trend line over time to indicate if the file sizes are increasing of decreasing This dashboard also visualizes: Errors and Warnings Number of Sheets, Views, and Views not on Sheets Time to Open and sync with Central
  • #46: RICH The Family Content view displays the number of families within each Revit file Trends are also provided Other views include compliance information (shown on next slide)
  • #47: RICH This portion of the dashboard include each Revit File and the number of families within each files in certain size ranges Family content standards compliance is included in the center of each doughnut
  • #48: RICH On the Collaboration dashboard, project files are shown in a visual in relation to the number of design options Also, the number of imported CAD and Image files are included All of which helps the user identify areas of the project to investigate further to help improve performance. Now I’ll turn it over to RENAD to speak about Enterprise Dashboard and provide a demo…
