INTRODUCTION
 Automation or automatic control is the use of various control systems for
operating equipment such as machinery , processes in factories , boilers and
heating treating ovens , switching in telephone networks , steering and
stabilization of ships ,aircraft and other application with minimal or reduced
human intervention .Some processes have been completely automated.
 The biggest benefit of automation is that it saves labor however , it is also used
to save energy and materials to improve quality ,accuracy and precision.
 Automation Principle :
1.Understand the existing process
 input/output analysis
 value chain analysis
 charting techniques and mathematical modeling
2. Simplify the process
 Reduce unnecessary steps and move
3 Automate the process
 Ten strategies for automation and production systems
 Automation migration strategy

 Reasons for automating :To increase labor productivity, to reduce labor cost , to mitigate
the effect of labor shortages, to reduce or remove routine manual tasks ,to improve
worker safety , to improve product safety , to improve product quality , to reduce
manufacturing lead time , to accomplish what cannot be done manually , to avoid the
high cost of not automating.
Recent and future trends
 Automated retail :The food industry has started to apply automation to the
ordering process . Some restaurants have automated food delivery to
customers tables using a conveyer belt system .
 Automated mining : Involve the removal of human labor from the mining
process . The mining industry is currently in the transition towards automation.
 Automated video surveillance
 Automated highway systems
 Automated waste management
 Industrial automation: Industrial automation deals primarily with the
automation of manufacturing , quality control and material handling
process . General purpose controllers for industrial include Programmable
logic controllers and computers . One trend is to use of machine vision to
provide automatic inspection and robot guidance functions . Energy
efficiency in industrial processes has a become higher priority.
Industrial automation plays significant role in the next five years because of
following reasons :
 New Technology directions : Industrial automation can and will generate
explosive growth with technology related with new inflection points-
nanotechnology , MEMS and nanotech sensors(tiny , low-power , low-cost
sensors)which can measure everything and anything, pervasive internet ,
machine to machine(M2M) networking . The future belongs to nanotech ,
wireless everything , and complex adaptive systems.
 Software applications : Major new software applications will be in wireless
sensors and distributed peer-to-networks-tiny operating systems in wireless
sensor nodes ,and the software that allows nodes to communicate with each
other as a larger complex adaptive system . That is the wave of the future.
 The fully automated factory : The vision of fully automated factories has
already existed for sometimes now- customers orders online , with electronic
transactions that negotiate batch size ,price , color ; intelligent robots and
sophisticated machines smoothly and rapidly fabricate a variety of
customized products on demand.
 Large industrial application of automation : Automotive assembly in painting ,
machining and metal processing ,plastics injection molding , forest processing
, robotics , material testing , industrial process control , motion simulation ,
animation , medical equipment.
Interest Areas
 I have choose this topic because I am interested in industrial automation . I
have good knowledge of electrical actuator application ,programmable
logic controller hardware details , programming PLC by Sematic manager
software. I have the theoretical knowledge I wanted to do it practically .
There is large application of industrial automation in different fields that
motivates me to learn more about this topics . Industrial automation has
changed the way of production systems , automation in the production
systems , manual labor in production systems.
 If I got selected then I would like to work on industrial automation using
Programming Logic Controllers used in the industry and also the use of
pneumatics and electro-pneumatics in the in the industrial applications. I
have technical skills . I need a platform opportunity to apply my skills
practically to achieve my success.
