FAMILIARIZATION ON
ATS AUTOMATION SYSTEM
(AIRCON 2100)
1
AUTOMATION
DEFINITION
• It is a technique of operating or controlling a
process by automatic means such as by
electronic devices reducing human
intervention to a minimum.
• Automation system provides Air surveillance
data (through radars)and flight related
information to ATCOs for safe & efficient
management of traffic.
2
REQUIREMENT OF AUTOMATION SYSTEM
• The air traffic controller's job consists of complex
tasks demanding a high degree of skill and active
application of unique cognitive abilities such as
spatial perception, information processing. The
controller must know where all of the aircraft under
his/her responsibility are, and determine how and
when to take action to ensure that they remain
separated from each other, while also seeing to their
requests and needs for descent, climb, take-off,
departure, etc.
•
3
CONTINUED
• Although it is well accepted that the human
controller in the system has performed
these tasks more than adequately over the
years, it is also accepted that improvements
could be made by using decision support
software tools. These tools are expected to
assist the controller to some degree with
conflict prediction, detection, advisory and
resolution.
• The expectation is that greater degrees of
accuracy could be achieved through the
sophisticated data processing associated 4
CONCLUSION
• PRIMARY MISSION OF AUTOMATION SYSTEM
IS TO ENHANCE AIR TRAVEL SAFETY BY
PROVIDING ATCOs WITH INFORMATION
CRITICAL TO MAINTAINING AN ORDERLY FLOW
OF AIR TRAFFIC IN SAFEST AND MOST
EFFICIENT WAY POSSIBLE.
5
BENEFITS OF AUTOMATION
• ENHANCED SAFETY, REDUCED DELAYS AND
INCREASED AIRPORT CAPACITY
• MORE EFFCIENT USEOF AIRSPACE WITH
REDUCED SEPERATIONS.
• REDUCES CONTROLLER WORKLOAD.

11
Common Time Facility (CTF)
A common timing system is used by automation system
which is derived from GPS.NTP servers provide this
common time (GPS time) to all subsystems of aotomation.
Two time servers are provided , which are updating time
through LAN
Time is updated on regular basis for all machines to
ensure time synchronization
12
SERVERS

Additional facilities
AIRCON 2100 has 02 additional facilities : (available
only at Ahmadabad)
 ATC Training Simulator : To provide ATC training to
the Controllers
 Software Support Facility (SSF): For testing of new
software and new versions
31
Software Support Facility (SSF)
 It is a small AIRCON 2100 system , which is used for:
• Testing of S/W of entire system including database
management
• Verification of the operational suitability of software
versions updates
• New versions are updated in the operational system
only after verification in SSF for smooth operation
32
33
Power supply distribution
 Four UPS of 15-KVA capacity each have been
provided
 UPS are divided into two sets (Set-I & Set-II)
 Each set of UPS consists of two UPS in load sharing
mode (50% load on each UPS)
 Both Set of UPS have I/P power supply through
different feed from the power house to ensure
maximum redundancy
34
 All servers & LAN have dual power supply and
hence have supply from both the Set of UPS
 Hence even in case of failure of one Set of UPS ,
all servers & LAN will have supply available from
other Set
 Set-1 supply power to main Workstation
 Set-II supply power to S/By Workstations
35
 The capacity of each UPS is sufficient enough so that :
•Each UPS of every set can take the load of entire Set
of UPS in case of failure of one UPS
 By following these steps , the failure due to power has
been minimized

CONTROL ANDMONITORINGDISPLAY (CMD)  AIRCON 2100 has two centralized Control and monitoring display (CMD) to monitor the health of entire automation system continuously  Displays each components in a graphical display format  It gives Visual & Audio alarm to alert the supervisor , if any component fails 46
  • 47. When a component fails, appropriate action can be taken on the CMD It gives system messages to provide system information about any change/fail Each element at CMD has a color code, which defines its status 47
  • 48. Cmd display (type c SYSTEM) 48
  • 49. different colors of SDD icons 1. Green - Integrated mode, 2. Light green - Mono mode, 3. Purple - Bypass mode, 4. Orange - Application down 5. Red - SDD down 6. Blue - Replay 49
  • 50. Recording facility Data Recording Facility (Video data) Voice recording Facility (Voice data) 50
  • 51. DATA RECORDING FACILITY (DRF) DRF records data of all Air Traffic Control Displays(SDD) round the clock 02 DRF servers are provided and both are recording simultaneously Every recording is available in two DRF at a time for data redundancy DRF records data in DAT tapes 51
  • 52. The last 24 hours data is recorded in the local disk of SDD , which can be replayed at any time Data beyond 24 hrs is saved in DAT tapes of DRF for future playback 52
  • 53. Voice recording facility  Two NEPTUNO Servers provided for voice recording  Both NEPTUNO Servers records voice simultaneously  NEPTUNO Server is 32 channel voice recorder  One Neptuno supervisor provided to control and monitor both Neptuno servers & to Configure the recording channels 53
  • 54. Synchronized replay AICON 2100 has one position for synchronized replay In synchronized replay both video and voice data are synchronized 54
  • 55. Kickstart server AIRCON 2100 has a very important server known as Kickstart server Basically it has backup & restore facility , which can restore any machine through a single click (kickstart) It has the backup of all servers & workstations No CD/DVDs are being used in AIRCON 2100 due to the important feature of Kickstart Server 55
  • 56. Backups are being taken on regular basis to ensure the backup of all machines In case of S/W failure of any machine this backup can be used to restore it Backup has to be taken whenever there is any change in system configuration 56
  • 58. LINUX IMP FEATURES • IT HAS A MULTI USER,MULTITASKING CAPABILITY. • REDUCED IMPACT OF SECURITY VULENARIBILITIES. • IT IS AN OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE i.e IT IS FREE OF COST AND LINUX AND MANY LINUX APPLICATIONS ARE DISTRIBUTED IN SOURCE FORM.SO IT CANBE MDIFIED AND IMPROVED AS PER REQUIREMENT. • HIGH DEGREE OF PORTABILITY i.e. WE CAN DO MODIFICATIONS. 58
  • 59. SDD  Presents the controller with “the real air picture”  Provides tabular and situation display formats  Receives data processed by both SDP and FDP and manages all these information for a coherent display  Displays radar tracks integrated with the flight plan information(data supply through SDP)  Displays aeronautical, geographical, and meteorological data through the use of graphical objects 59
  • 60. SDD FUNCTIONS  Radar tracks, plots and meteorological data display  Flight plans lists display  Automatic modification of flight plans lists according to the different flight plan statuses  Display of lists of flights in Hold, Lost or Conflict Route graphical display of flight plans with estimates of passing time and levels on each route fix point  Flight Plan route graphical modification 60
