Avoiding Professional Complacency
COMPLACENCYSOURCE: MERRIAM WEBSTER
• A FEELING OF BEING SATISFIED WITH HOW THINGS ARE AND NOT WANTING TO TRY TO MAKE THEM
BETTER : A COMPLACENT FEELING OR CONDITION
• SELF-SATISFACTION ESPECIALLY WHEN ACCOMPANIED BY UNAWARENESS OF ACTUAL DANGERS OR
DEFICIENCIES
• AN INSTANCE OF USUALLY UNAWARE OR UNINFORMED OF SELF SATISFACTION
WHAT NEXT?
• WE CLIMB FROM THE TRENCHES AND HOLES TO REACH THE TOP, AND ONCE WE GET THERE, WE’RE
CONTENT WITH OUR ACHIEVEMENTS
THE RUSTOUT SYNDROME
“Rustout is the slow death that follows when we stop making the choices that
keep life alive. It’s the feeling of numbness that comes from taking the safe way,
never accepting new challenges, continually surrendering to the day-to-day
routine. Rustout means we are no longer growing, but at best, are simply
maintaining. It implies that we have traded the sensation of life for the security of
a paycheck … Rustout is the opposite of burnout. Burnout is overdoing …
rustout is underbeing.”
—RICHARD LEIDER and STEVE BUCHHOLTZ, The Rustout Syndrome

KICK LAZINESS GOODBYE!
• PEOPLE WHO ARE COMPLACENT ARE INTERNALLY FOCUSED ON THEMSELVES INSTEAD OF EXTERNALLY
FOCUSED ON OTHERS OR THE SITUATION AROUND THEM.
• THEY WORK AT A CONSTANT SPEED, EVEN WHEN CIRCUMSTANCES DEMAND FAST ACTION.
SET GOALS AND REVIEW THEM
CONTINUOUSLY
• OUTCOME GOALS ARE THOSE THAT COMPARE THE PERFORMANCES OF ATHLETES WITH
THOSE OF OTHER ATHLETES. FOR EXAMPLE, " I WANT TO WIN THE A CHAMPIONSHIP"
MEANS THAT THE ATHLETE'S OUTCOME DEPENDS ON THE PERFORMANCES OF OTHERS.
• PERFORMANCE GOALS ARE USED TO IMPROVE AN ATHLETE'S INDIVIDUAL
PERFORMANCE. FOR EXAMPLE, SCORE 20 GOALS DURING A SEASON. THE ATHLETE
HAS MUCH BETTER CONTROL HERE.
• PROCESS GOALS ARE USED TO IMPROVE THE EXECUTION OF A SKILL. FOR EXAMPLE,
IMPROVE 100M RUNNING TECHNIQUE.
WHAT ARE GOALS?
STEPS
IT’S A MIND THING, GET RIDE OF IT
THROUGH THE MIND FIRST!
• I AM GOOD AT THIS
• NO NEED TO WORRY
• I HAVE DONE IT BEFORE
• I AM THE BEST
THANK YOU
