This document provides an introduction and theoretical background for a study examining perceptions of British regional accents and faces. The study aims to determine the relative contribution of auditory (accent) and visual (face) information on interpersonal judgments. Previous research found stereotypes associated with accents can influence evaluations. Accents like RP are seen as intelligent but less pleasant, while Scottish is friendly. Visual research showed attraction and age affect face perceptions. The study will test if auditory perceptions are supported or conflicted by matching visual stimuli, and analyze effects of respondent and stimulus-provider gender.
