Baking for Math Unit	This unit will help students understand the importance of fractions and mathematics. With math being some students least favorite subject, I thought the “bake sale” theme would help spice things up more. Most students enjoy eating and at the end of the unit we have a surprise for the students.
Roles of Teacher, Parents, and StudentsTeachers The teacher will be the facilitator and guide throughout this unit. Students will be given specific instructions and only guided when needed.ParentsParents will have to play a small role by review and signing sheet each week to ensure that their child is actively engaged in the project.StudentsStudents will be the managers, employees, and shoppers in the project. They will be expected to provide a weekly presentation on their store each week.
Benefits of the Unit This unit will be beneficial to students because it will show them the importance of money and fractions. Fractions can be used in upper level math classes and money is what we all like and love to buy what we want.
Standards and Objectives My subject is Math 3rd GradeStandard: 3.5 Model equivalent fractions with concrete objects or pictorial representationsObjectives:Students will be able to identify two pies cut differently and be able to tell if the pies are equal in pieces or not.Student will be able to tell the difference between fractions with pictures and tell of the picture represent the same fraction in each or not.Standard: 3.6 Use coins to make change up to $1.00.Objectives:Students will be able to make change from a bake sale where items will range from $0.25 to $1.00.Students will be placed in groups and able to count out change, with play money, to specific problems from a worksheet.
Project Based Learning	Project Based Learning can be defined as learning through, with, and from your own peers. It is also using projects to teach new concepts and can even help by keeping students engaged more.
