Introduction
The Bangladesh Liberation War was a revolution and armed conflict sparked by the rise of the Bengali
nationalist and self determination movement in East Pakistan, which resulted in the independence of
Bangladesh. This war started on 26TH March 1971, and it ended on 16TH December 1971.
Liberation War Photo
This powerful photograph captures a pivotal
moment in the Bangladesh Liberation War of
1971. The image depicts a group of Bangladeshi
freedom fighters, their faces etched with
determination, as they stand resolute against the
oppressive forces they are fighting to overcome.
Background of the Liberation
War
From the early historic period, Bangladesh (Banga, Bengal, East Bengal) was the part of
India. In 1947, it became the part of Pakistan as East Bengal (later in October 1955, it
had been renamed as East Pakistan). The distance of those two parts of Pakistan was
more than 1,500 km and separated by Indian territory. Not only that those two parts of
Pakistan had no common border and culturally and socially those were totally different
from each other, except the religion, Islam. Although the population of the two wings was
close to equal, political and military power were concentrated in West Pakistan and it
was widely perceived that East Pakistan was being exploited economically and
politically, leading to many grievances.
In 1952 February 21st, Pakistan government forcibly tried to stop the demand of the
Bengali people to establish "Bangla" as one of the streets to protests unanimously and
thus "seeds of Bangladeshi nationalism" was sown during that movement. In 1954
March, The United Front of Awami League and the Krishak Sramik Party won the most
of the seats in the East Bengal Legislative Assembly. Sheikh Mujib was elected in this
assembly and serving briefly as the minister for agriculture. Muslim league got only 9
seats out of 310.

government, as per the six points demand.
Separate Currencies
Two separate but freely convertible
currencies for the two wings have to be
introduced, as demanded in the six points.
Taxation and Revenue
The power of taxation and revenue collection
should be vested on state governments, as
per the six points demand.
Foreign Exchange Accounts
There has to be two separate accounts for
the foreign exchange of the two wings, as
demanded in the six points.
Separate Paramilitary Force
East Pakistan should have a separate
paramilitary force, as per the six points
demand.
Six points demand
Six Points Demand

League, in 1966. These points called for a high degree of autonomy for the then East Pakistan (now
Bangladesh) within the framework of a united Pakistan.
Mass Uprising of 1969
• The 1969 East Pakistan mass rising was a democratic political
uprising.
• It was led by the students backed by various political parties such
as the Awami League and National Awami Party (NAP).
• The mass rising was due to the protest of military rule, political
repressions, Agartala Conspiracy Case and the incarceration of
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and other Bengali nationalists.
Continued Uprising
The uprising consisted of mass demonstrations and sporadic conflicts between government armed forces
and demonstrators.
1970: General Election of Pakistan

Based)

7 December 1970 to
elect members of the

with 162 in East
Pakistan and 138 in
West Pakistan.
2 Awami League
(East Based)

contest between two
social democratic parties
- the Pakistan Peoples
Party (PPP) in the west
and the Awami League
in the east.
3 Election Results

election were: Awami
League - 167 seats,
PPP - 86 seats.
1971: Operation Searchlight
Operation searchlight was a military operation carried out by the Pakistan
Army in an effort to curb the Bengali nationalists movement in former east
Pakistan in the midnight of 25 March 1971. 25th March is recognized as a
black chapter in the history of Bangladesh. On this day in 1971, Pakistan
Army carried out one of the worst massacres in Bangladesh. Since 2017,
this day has been celebrated as Genocide Day in our country.
