 Antiviruses & Computer Security 101
What is a Computer Virus?
• A computer program that can replicate itself
and spread from one computer to another.
• It might corrupt or delete data on your
  computer
• It might use your email program to spread
  itself to other computer
• It may even erase
  everything on your hard disk.
Viruses are evil…
• Viruses can take control of Your Computers if
  not guarded against
• Such controlled machines are called zombies.
• They then try to spread to other computers,
  creating a network called “botnet”
• Over 8 Lakh bot infected computers in India
• Botnets are used by cybercriminals to send
spam, steal information and launch 'denial of
service' attacks, in which all the zombies
access one website at once, forcing it offline.
                                                    3
Some terms you may have heard
• Probing - Scanning the ports of the computer
  to find vulnerabilities
• Trojans - Software which hides inside known
programs and so gets installed/run by the user
• Spyware - Software which collects information
  without the users knowledge
• Phishing – Pretending to be a useful /popular
digital source so as to trick users into
  providing sensitive information

                                               4
Common ways viruses enter your PC?
• Infected USB flash drives
• Trojans in Freely available software from
  untrusted sites

those catering to lotto, adult content, free
downloads for songs, movies, games and TV
  shows

                                                    5
Indicators that your PC might be infected
• The PC runs more slowly than normal
• The PC stops responding or freezes often
• The PC crashes and restarts every few minutes
• The PC restarts on its own and then fails to run
    normally
• Applications on your PC don't work correctly
• Disks or disk drives are inaccessible
• You can't print correctly
• You see unusual error messages
• You see distorted menus and dialog boxes
                                                       6
The effect of Viruses on you?
• Damage your files leading to Loss of
  Personal Data
• Slows down your PC by eating into the RAM
  and Processor Time
• Uses up internet bandwidth leading to
frustration when surfing and checking email
• Trojans end up taking control of your
PC which may then be used for
  hacking, terrorist emails, spamming
                                                7
The effect of Viruses on your Practice
• Damaged Files lead to loss of Practice &
  Patient Data
• Slower Access to Hospital/Clinic Software
• Spam Sending will ensure that even useful
mails send to other doctors and patients will
be delivered in their spam folders
• Increased cost on IT infrastructure in your
practice as regular maintenance of PCs will be
  required
• Random PC behavior will frustrate you and
make it impossible for you to work 8
Simple Prevention Tips
• Use an Antivirus
• Scan all external devices before use
• Avoid downloading files with extensions like .exe,
.msi, .bat unless you trust the source
• Schedule Anti virus scans to run every week
