The BDD Chawls, developed under the Bombay Development Department, provide housing in Mumbai but suffer from poor maintenance and safety issues, with many chawls in dilapidated condition. A significant redevelopment project is underway, costing Rs16,000 crore, which aims to upgrade living conditions and increase living space from 160 sq. ft. to 500 sq. ft. for existing residents over the next seven years, while introducing modern amenities and open spaces in the new designs.
