James Oglethorpe founded the colony of Georgia in 1732 to provide charity and economic opportunities. The colony was initially governed by trustees, but became a royal colony in 1752 under direct control of the British crown. Georgia ratified the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and fought in the Revolutionary War. The state's first constitution in 1777 established a legislative branch but only allowed white male landowners to vote. Georgia later adopted its current 10th constitution in 1983 to define the separation of powers among state government branches.
