This document summarizes a study that aimed to reach a consensus among experts on appropriate accommodations for English Language Learners (ELLs) taking state assessments. The study identified two main categories of accommodations: direct linguistic support accommodations, which adjust the language of the test; and indirect linguistic accommodations, which adjust testing conditions. Examples of accommodations in each category are provided. The study also recommends considering an ELL student's level of English proficiency when determining which accommodations they need. It emphasizes that accommodations should be clearly defined and suitable for ELLs at different English and native language literacy levels.
