- 2. If you have visited the library lately, you’ve probably noticed the construction in our parking lot. The existing parking lot, now nearly 20 years old, is getting a facelift. New drainage is being added and repairs are being made on the brick and asphalt surfaces in the lot and roadway. This project is scheduled for completion by June 1st. Meanwhile, we deeply appreciate your patience during the disruption. Even greater news is that the library and the City of Westerville are partnering on a project that will provide an additional 60 to 65 parking spaces in the area located between the library’s current parking lot and the bike trail near the railroad depot. We expect construction to begin in August and are excited to be able to offer this long-awaited additional parking. We look forward to re-opening our lot and are grateful for the opportunity to work with the City in creating much-needed parking space. The additional parking, along with the upgrades to the library’s HVAC system this summer, will make access to our library services more convenient and comfortable. Barlow Better and even more parking Summer Events and Treasurer Opening The upcoming summer season will feature two annual events proudly sponsored by the Friends. We happily provide the funding for prize books that children can earn by reading and attending library events throughout the Super Heroes summer reading program that begins May 28th. The Friends also will sponsor the 22nd annual Ice Cream Social on July 9th that will welcome all ages to ice cream and toppings, story times and live music on the library’s front lawn. We hope you’ll be a part of these wonderful library programs. Currently, the Friends’Board is seeking a volunteer with accounting experience to serve as treasurer. The responsibilities include recording transactions in QuickBooks, producing financial statements, filing tax forms, and maintaining records for our nonprofit organization. Time required is approximately 5 hours per month. Interested? Each school day, our Library Link service delivers books and other materials requested by students, faculty and staff at the school buildings in the Westerville district. This week, Library Link Awards were presented to the elementary and middle school receiving the most items delivered this school year: Annehurst Elementary School (2,443 items) and Heritage Middle School (1,040 items). To receive Library Link delivery, students need to have a valid Westerville Library card and turn in a completed Library Link application form signed by a parent or guardian. - 3. A Most Unusual Name In September 1862, a girl was born toWilliam and Mary Coggeshall. William proclaimed that he would not name his daughter until the Union captured Richmond,Virginia, the capitol of the Confederacy. On April 3, 1865, the capitol fell and the girl was named Emancipation Proclamation (nicknamed Prockie). William felt that the Emancipation Proclamation was one of the most important acts of President Lincoln. William Coggeshall was sent by the government as an envoy to Ecuador where he caught a fever and died. His widow Mary and children moved toWesterville. Mary became the postmistress here in 1880 and Prockie was named her assistant. Imagination Station? Located in the Youth Services area, this interactive display is regularly transformed into a themed exhibit intended to actively engage, entertain and educate young children. Toddlers and preschoolers are encouraged to play with toys, games and props that can help build important skills such as sharing, storytelling, critical thinking and problem solving. The themes at the station have included a bank with opportunities for coin matching, writing a check, operating an ATM and counting out currency, as well as a veterinarian’s office, farmer’s market and post office. Dress-up is often included!

Certified Zentangle teacher Laura Emler will lead us in an auditory exploration of the art form by establishing a relaxed, meditative atmosphere and providing participants with the tools to create a work of art. Historical Reenactment: The Triumphant Oberlin Wellington Rescue of 1858 Thursday, June 11 7-8:15pm Members of the Kelton House Underground Railroad Community Advisory Committee commemorate the dramatic events that occurred in Wellington and Oberlin, Ohio, in 1858. Carefully selected narratives from periodicals and historical scholars, specifically drawn from the book, The Town that Started the Civil War by Nat Brandt, form the basis of the program.
