This chapter discusses bilingual acquisition in children. It outlines 6 types of bilingual childhood categorized based on the languages of the parents and community. Type studies are presented for each type. The chapter also covers interference and transfer between languages, code-switching behaviors, and personal factors influencing children's bilingual development. Later childhood bilingualism is discussed, finding advantages in areas like numerical ability, verbal flexibility, and general reasoning for those exposed to a second language from an early age.
