Our fossil-based economic system is reaching its limits. Calls for alternatives to the existing industrial culture are growing louder and louder.
With this in mind, we took a long, hard look at a mass-produced article – the toothbrush. Most of the dental products currently on the market
are based almost exclusively on fossil raw materials. Sustainable alternatives such as interchangeable heads have failed to take hold.
Why toothbrushes made of bioplastics?
What we offer
www.biobrush-berlin.com
We’re making toothbrushes out of the wood scraps from the timber processing industry before they can be burned! Bioplastics and cellulose-based packaging,
nylon bristles made from castor oil, all free of harmful plasticizers, in a clear design for a fair price!
● What good are ‘organic’ toothbrushes?
● What happens to our toothbrushes when they wear out?
● What is a ‘fair’ profit?
● Do our organic toothbrushes brush well?
2
Health
● Our bioplastics contain natural (citric acid-based) platicizers
● Our colours contain no heavy metals such as chrome
● The raw material of our bristles is castor oil, which is used to create nylon. Independent dentists
attest that nylon is still the best, most hygienic material

Environment
● Cascade use of bioplastics and packaging – we process wood scraps from sawmills which are normally burned
● These wood scraps are from sustainable forestry (certificate available)
● A marginal amount of fossil raw materials in the brushes and packaging – the minimum still needed for the manufacturing process
● Because of the scarce amount of fossil raw materials in our brushes, they release virtually no CO2 when burned at the end of their life cycle
Location
● The organic toothbrushes are produced in Germany
castor
● The brush handle is biodegradable according to DIN EN ISO 14855
standards
● The colouring and packaging are biodegradable according to DIN EN
13432 standards
● Biodegradable plastics can be disposed of in recycling containers or
household garbage
● Bioplastics are not yet reclaimed – this is not yet economically feasible
● The brushes are burned (virtually carbon-neutral)
● Nylon bristles are not biodegradable – A comparable hygienic AND
biodegradable material is not yet available
● The bristles account for approximately 6% of the total brush weight
In summary, one can say that the toothbrush is 94% biodegradable,
and can be disposed of in recycling containers or household garbage.

And in the end?

Fair price
We believe in a fair price policy which benefits the largest number of customers possible.
We have followed the recommendations of independent dentists,
manufacturers and research institutions. The most important
question: What is the latest in useful innovations? The answer:
The toothbrush is already a fully- developed product.
What matters?
● small to medium-sized brush head
● soft to medium brush head
● multi-tufted clumps of bristles
● smooth brush cut
● well-rounded bristles (best ensured by smooth cut
● angled brush head
Our brush is built around these simple but effective principles.
According to the experts, “everything else is marketing.”

Design
We searched for a clear colour and design language
that meets all these requirements for a good
toothbrush and distinguishes itself from other
designs currently on the market.
Design and Packaging
Packaging
Top priority – the product takes center stage. No
classical blister packaging with large print in the
background. This clearly sets us apart from our
competitors.

Biobrush is the brainchild of Nannett Wiedemann and Sönke Baumgärtner. We met at a Start-Ups event in 2014. Both of us have run our own businesses:
Sönke Baumgärtner conceived, produced and chartered houseboats – the Seemobil. Nannett Wiedemann designed and produced, among other things,
children’s knitwear for her children’s label 667.
We both have a design background. From the start, we knew whatever we developed together had to be ecologically and functionally meaningful, not
overpriced, and above all, look fantastic.
We founded our company in July 2015. In October, we participated in the proof-of-concept competition at the Entrepreneurship Summit 2015 in Berlin,
where we presented our product for the first time. Our biobrush won the competition, and helped us secure our first pre-sales.

Final comments
Biobrush is a simple product. It is not intended to revolutionize the world of toothbrushing or be an expensive designer object to be put on display. The
name, product, packaging and price are all part of a value-oriented green economy. Our success at a competition and our sizeable pre-sales are proof that
our concept works.
So what do we want?
A successful collaboration with you.
