Using a business approach to
developing a library service
Neil Infield – Manager Business & IP Centre
We were the library of ‘last resort’
3
Now we are open for anyone who wants to do research
academic, personal or commercial
Some of the
greatest ideas
were ‘borrowed’
from others.
For example…
Apple
Computer
‘invented’
the GUI
and
mouse.
Steve
Jobs sued
Microsoft
when
Bill Gates
‘stole’ it.
But
Steve Jobs
had ‘been
inspired’ by a
‘fact-finding’
visit to Zerox
Parc.
8
So we didn’t
feel guilty
about copying
New York
Public Library
Business
Service
In fact they
encouraged
us to copy
their SIBL
Service on
Madison
Avenue
Potted History
1852 - Patent Office Library
formed
1973 - British Library created
1982 - Business information
collection formed
2006 - Business & IP Centre
opened
So how
did we
start in
2006?
Like any start
up, the first
thing we did
was Market
Research.
We asked
what our
customers
wanted from
us.
The 2nd, 3rd,
and 4th thing we
did was to try to
implement their
requests.
Easier said than
done!
This was our
starting
point.
Free access
to £50m of
business
information
What a lot of information!
We added a
helpful friendly
knowledgeable
inquiry service.
With Business
and Intellectual
Property
specialists on
hand
Plus hands-
on training
for our
range of
databases
But that wasn’t
enough.
We had to train
as workshop
presenters
…
Which was
scary for us
introvert
librarians
But that still wasn’t enough.
So we had to train as Business Advisors.
Even scarier stuff for librarians!
At first we were terrified…
But gradually we became more self-assured
And now
for many
of us,
it’s the
favourite
part of
the job
It turns out business advice isn’t rocket
science, it just requires:
• Building rapport
• Confidentiality
• Being non-judgmental
• Having good listening skills
• Referral knowledge
• Never telling… but helping decisions
• AKA the Reference Interview
We also
had to
spend our
evenings
networking
And attending
‘Inspiring
Entrepreneurs’
events.
With the likes of
Lord Sugar,
Anita Roddick
and Stellios.
To name but a
few.
One of my
favourite
evenings.
With Levi
Roots and his
Reggae
Reggae
Sauce song.
Plus we recruited a team of 15 partners to
deliver specialist workshops
Rasheed Ogunlaru
Business Coach
Jessica Huie
PR expert
And experts to
offer one to one
advice, such as
our Inventor in
Residence Mark
Sheahan.
Who has helped
nearly 1,000
inventors for
free.
We became
known as a
‘safe haven’
for inventors
We developed
customer
friendly guides
compared to
what had
gone before
With more
graphics and
white space
to assist the
20%
entrepreneurs
who are
dyslexic

Every week we would visit one of

Libraries.
We divide the day into:
What next for my business idea?
And…
How do I protect a business

A whole day of presenting and
answering questions is
exhausting!

  • #43: So we can explain
  • #44: So we can explain
  • #55: Guy initially used the British Library’s Centre for patent advice when setting up his business Ohyo, manufacturing and selling collapsible water bottles. Over 600,000 bottles have now been sold worldwide at outlets including Boots and Marks and Spencer. Guy also talked about how the British Library helped him to protect his idea, back at the start of his journey
  • #65: Deborah Meadon, Anita Roddick, Orla Kiely, Alan Sugar.
  • #67: Our whole webinar will be divided into three sections. The What. What is IP (by way of introduction an overview to understand what it is we’re working with) The How How do I protect my IP (about 80% of our time will be looking at the different types of IP and how we gain protection) The Why Why should I protect IP (we finish off concluding why IP really is important and what you should do next)
  • #68: I like to see each of these forms of IP as members of a family. Each of these innovations and creations can be protected by a different form of IP. List each of them and why they are what they are. Its good to identify what your creations are and which IP could cover it. A working knowledge of this will help to make good decisions around protection.
  • #69: All forms of IP can exist in one company protecting different parts of the business. You or your company can also own more than one type of IP depending on what you wish to protect. Patent for the ring pull opener – US 3428212 (1969). (closure for easy opening cans). The inventor licensed the invention to coke. *(you can jump to the next slide and back to show the full patent). Registered Trademark for Coca-Cola, registered in 1893. Registered Design (in the US design patent) No. 48,160, Nov 1915. One of the first examples of a company differentiating itself with packaging. Copyright for old advertising. Trade secret for the recipe 135 years old. After Dr. John S. Pemberton invented Coca-Cola in 1886, the formula was kept a close secret, only shared with a small group and not written down until 1919. The Company transferred the secret formula to the World of Coca-Cola from a vault at SunTrust Bank in downtown Atlanta, Georgia where it had been housed since 1925. Know-how the sum knowledge since 1892 of selling, marketing, promoting, distributing an iconic product around the world. Invaluable years of people experience and knowledge.
  • #70: Here is the original full patent by the inventor M A Rohrlick, 1969. You can see how patents often include drawings on how the device works as well as the ‘claims’ in writing. ‘Claims’ are the things of novelty that make the patent unique and innovative. In a patent or patent application, the claims define, in technical terms, the extent, i.e. the scope, of the protection conferred by a patent, or the protection sought in a patent application. In other words, the purpose of the claims is to define which subject-matter is protected by the patent (or sought to be protected by the patent application). This is termed as the "notice function" of a patent claim—to warn others of what they must not do if they are to avoid infringement liability.[1] The claims are of the utmost importance both during prosecution and litigation alike. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patent_claim#:~:text=In%20a%20patent%20or%20patent,sought%20in%20a%20patent%20application.
  • #71: Possibly the most recognisable logo in the world, whatever language it is in.
  • #72: The unique shape means it can be felt inside an ice box.
  • #73: The secret formula is only known to a few members of the company.
  • #74: Coca-Cola and Father Christmas: The Sundblom Santa story - 1931: ‘My hat’s off to the pause that refreshes’ We commissioned Haddon Sundblom (an illustrator) to create an image of Santa Claus. He may have been paid as much as $1,000 per painting - a lot of money at that time (you could buy a car for $700). For inspiration, Sundblom turned to Clement Clark Moore's 1822 poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas" (commonly called "'Twas the Night Before Christmas"). Moore's description of St. Nick led to an image of a warm, friendly, pleasantly plump and human Santa. (And even though it's often said that Santa wears a red coat because red is the colour of Coca-Cola, Santa appeared in a red coat before Sundblom painted him.
  • #75: Cobra - which is like a business encyclopaedia; containing fact sheets on the different practical aspects of starting a business as well as industry specific factsheets. So if you want a guide on writing a business plan, want to know the different legal statuses you can register your business as - as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each or if you want to factsheet on what you need to know when starting a coffee shop including typical costs, then we would point you towards this database.
