He has been active in book industry standards since 1995. Since 1999, Richard has chaired the BISAC Metadata Committee, the group that governs bibliographic data standards for the U.S. book industry. He was educated in the Great Books Program at St. John’s College in Santa Fe, NM.
ONIX is the product of negotiation and compromise Many data points in ONIX are specific to the business needs of a given country or market There are often multiple ways of presenting the same data ONIX recipients want consistency
Most major players in our market have indicated that they plan to implement ONIX 3.0 early in 2010 Establishing Best Practices now allows all ONIX implementers to aim for the same target Consistent practices for eBook data early in the development of this business will save us trouble down the road
A focus on key data elements Detailed style rules for each data element Usage guidelines and examples provided Incorporation into BISG’s Product Data Certification Program (PDCP)
Identification of key data elements Definition(s) Style rules Examples of proper usage Details on how to present unusual data Indication of when to provide this data Business case for supplying this data Guidelines on presenting this data in ONIX
This record is for an actual eBook, although the ISBN has been changed to protect the innocent I will go through this record in detail using XMLSPY We will compare this record to a record for the same book in ONIX 2.1
XML can be intimidating if you are not familiar with it, but it is actually easy to read once you understand the tagging and structure You can code your internal product database to output consistently-formatted, valid XML records for each product
Begins Aug 21st, at next Metadata Committee meeting Includes revision of Best Practices for ONIX 2.1 Will highlight Best Practices on digital products Reviewed & discussed at Metadata Committee mtgs. on 9/24, 10/16, 11/20, and 12/18 Final draft approved by Metadata on 12/18 Final draft endorsed by BISG Board on 1/21
