This document summarizes a study that developed a habitat assessment tool to prioritize habitat preservation for bobcats on Kiawah Island, South Carolina. Researchers created a modified Habitat Suitability Index (MHSI) model incorporating Food Suitability Index (FSI), Cover Suitability Index (CSI), and Den Suitability Index (DSI) which were informed by telemetry data, prey counts, and den locations. The results found 367.1 hectares of forest and 306.4 hectares of shrub were highly suitable bobcat habitat. The tool can help identify the most available lands for preservation as development continues on the suburbanizing barrier island.
