Bound Analysis
This is the opening scene of the trailer straight away
close up of a woman wearing a vest and looking
slightly shabby under a kitchen sink and we see what
we think is her sabotaging the pipes for the water, the
audience reaction is why is she not very lady like with
her clothing as well as (stereotypically) why is she
doing a man’s work which involve plumbing and
getting dirty.
Then a straight cut is used of a woman’s legs (lower mid
shot) in a short pencil skirt giving the idea of the film
being very sexual with the play of sexual relations with
the contrast from the previous girl however you don’t see
the woman who’s wearing the black pencil skirt. The
colour black she’s wearing does give the connotations of
mystery as well as darkness.
A mid shot is used of a confrontation of two woman sort of
sole gazing into one another with the music in the background
of a non-diegetic low base sudden stop as the woman open
the door, giving the audience the view or impression that
something eerier is potentially going to happen. Again, dress
code for both women are very basic and simple and not lady
like without showing any Décolletage or not really trying to
flaunt her body or any bits of it ,the opposite of the basic
stereotype of the woman always wanting sexual attention.
Two women in the darkness abnormally close to each other with not much
clothing on gives the audience the impression of some sort of connection between
them as well as the fact of the scenes beforehand. One would come to the
conclusion of the women being lesbians, the relationship seems more of an
emotional one as lesbians wouldn’t really search for a sexual connection with the
person the same as a heterosexual person would, this idea of lesbians being in a
gangster crime film trailer gives the audience the idea of woman in the 1996 were
not getting any emotion attention from a male, giving the impression society in the
1996 wasn’t ideal for woman, or just that this particular examples shows how
valuable trust is to the people in the film rather than a more “human” approach to
things from another perspective.
Mid shot of a room is used showing positioning of each
character with the male in control of the situation and
stereotypically the dominant one. She tries to talk but is
overpowered by his voice, showing the audience the
vulnerability of the woman in a “man's world” links in with
the bizarre idea of woman taking leads in a crime gangster
film. Another contrast between the two girls one's very
masculine with her clothing other is sort of lazily dressed
showing a lot of skin like a woman would.
Contrast to the previous scene of the woman being delicate
and seductive, back to the “real world” of a crime gangster
film where the men are violent and ruthless fitting in with the
stereotype, again the main character is the one in red giving
the connotations of danger including blood. An odd spot is not
presents of a male or female throughout the whole scene
including this, a huge contrast with today's society and
stereotypes of “blacks” being part of crime and violence.
Reflection shot of women doing her make up or at least
getting it all out as women dom, seeing the colours being
used are black, red and crème all have different
connotations of danger and love for red and darkness for
black and purity with the crème, another reason for
showing the audience this shot is to show us the lady side
of the character to tell us she still has feminine “set of
skills” i.e. using her “skills “to be seductive and trick men
,stereotype of a woman's role in a gangster / crime film.
A mid shot is used of a woman in black holding a
gun crouching about to shoot someone,
stereotypically, this is a man's job in a
gangster/crime. The gender roles have been
swapped. This gives a sense of abnormality in the
film.
“Bound ” in the centre with non-diegetic sound of
an electric guitar draws the attention of the
audience also the title moves and flashes too this is
to make sure your main focus on the screen in on
the moving and flashing object not just a still image
the amount of shots shown are 53 scenes in total all
fast pace.
