- 6. FDR and the Public Works Projects Many Public Buildings, including schools, were funded by the government under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, America went through its greatest economic crisis. Around 25% of people were out of work. Public works projects were started to give people jobs.
- 7. Artists were among the people who were given jobs. The murals at Coit Tower were some of the first works funded by public works projects.

One might guess that the artist was trying to connect the education one would receive at Roosevelt to the classical ideals of learning Celebrated by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Here is a statue from the Ancient Greeks. The image of the half-naked woman at Roosevelt was covered up for many years because some people deemed it inappropriate for students your age. What do you think?
