Fake news is generated by outlets
that masquerade as actual media
sites but promulgate false or
misleading accounts designed to
deceive the public.
When these activities move from
sporadic and haphazard to
organized and systematic efforts,
they become disinformation
campaigns with the potential to
disrupt campaigns and governance
in entire countries.

PROBLEM
Misinformation
Unintentional mistakes such as inaccurate photo
captions, dates, statistics, translations, or when
satire is taken seriously.
Disinformation
Deliberate publication of private information for
personal or corporate rather than public
interest, such as revenge porn. Deliberate
change of context, date or time of genuine
content.

REVERSE
IMAGE
SEARCH
You can do a reverse image search in Google
Image. Google Image is especially useful for
identifying the author/artist of an image and for
finding similar images so that you can see how they
were used. It's also pretty good at showing you
previous uses of the image online.

TINEYE
TinEye is especially good at showing how and how often
an image is being (or has been) used online. While it
won't show you similar images like the Google Image
reverse image search does, it will allow you to how an
image may have been edited for use by different people
online.

Early Warning System
Create a system so that
organizations can alert each other
rapidly when they discover
disinformation that threatens
human life or disrupts democracy
during elections. The emphasis will
be on moving quickly and
collectively to undermine
disinformation before it can take
hold.

SUMMARY
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to solving the issue of
fake news. Even technology doesn't pose a single solution
to the fake news problem.
We need a multi-hyphenated approach from all
stakeholders involved.
