Breaking the Ice
How to meet new people
This ship is breaking the ice
These people are
breaking the ice, too!
Breaking the ice
• In English, we say that overcoming an awkward silence
with a stranger is called “breaking the ice.”
• Think of the silence as a cold, unpleasant wall of ice.
Now say something warm and friendly to break it down!
• These two people are meeting for the first time.
• What should they say to each other?
• What shouldn’t they say to each other?
• These people have just met for the first time.
• What did he say to her?
• What do you want to know when you first meet
someone? What do you usually ask them?
• People who like to meet others are usually called
extroverts, while people who feel shy around strangers
are called introverts.
• Do you like meeting new people?
• How can we overcome feeling nervous when meeting
someone new?
• Where should you go to meet new
people?
Dialogue
• Work with a partner. Imagine you have just met for the
first time. What would you say to each other?
• Write a short conversation. Ask lots of questions so can get
to know the other person.
