Community Planning -making an impact Brian Cavanagh Clifden Consultancy
A modern morality tale local community concerned about young boys drinking and hanging around local park. seen as being unsafe-community demand action-summon community leaders to public meeting key agencies and public figures engage in buck passing as it is not there responsibility meeting creates more heat than light community feels not listened to, patronised and still living with problem civic leaders frustrated by lack of “joined upness,” unloved and unappreciated
What good looks like!- an outcome led approach cultural not organisational change it’s a process not an event effective on multi-layered problems community and voluntary sectors are equal partners not just consultation but involvement!
Reasonable expectations-realistic demands shifting the balance of power public services that are “citizen facing” new approaches to policy challenges addresses issues of representation and capacity about service improvement and community engagement improvements that are tangible
First principles-making a difference to empower communities, representatives and public servants to re-establish trust between decision takers and communities to ensure more effective and transparent decisions ability to tackle complex challenges that don’t fit organisational boundaries to harness community and voluntary expertise
