McKinsey 7S Model was developed by Robert H. Waterman Jr. and Tom
Peters during America’s economic recession in the 1980s. The 7S model
identifies seven mutually reinforcing organizational elements that support the
development and performance of an organization. The seven elements are divided
into two equally pivotal categories:
Hard Elements
•Strategy: Organization’s plan to establish and maintain competition
advantage for survival and sustainable growth
•Structure: Clearly defined roles and reporting
responsibilities within an organization
to help execute strategies
•Systems: Daily procedures
and activities that staff members
conduct in normal business
operations
Soft Elements
•Skills: Skills and competencies of
staff members from systematic,
rigorous trainings
•Staff: Human capital needed to
execute strategies
•Style: Management style adopted to lead staff members. Waterman and
Peters found that outstanding organizations adopted both overall
centralization of authority and decentralization of specific departments
to maintain the company’s shared values while enhancing innovations.
•Shared Values: Core values that are understood and believed by all
levels of personnel in an organization and the one direction that the
entire organization is geared towards
The 7S Model can be applied to help organizations enhance operational
performance, monitor and improve changes, and identify the best way to
implement proposed strategies. According to the McKinsey 7S Model, an
organization can only succeed when all seven elements of the organization are
effectively communicated, integrated, and harmonized.

3. Economic News
A New Corporate Position: Chief Data Officer: On October 15, 2012, San
Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee announced the city's plan to hire a chief data officer
(CDO). According to govtech.com, "[San Francisco's] new chief data officer
will be a member of the mayor's staff, operating out of the budget office." San
Francisco is not the first city to embrace the new functional member. In fact,
New York, Chicago, and other major cities in the U.S. have already added the
CDO position in the mayor's office.
The role of the CDO has become a popular topic in corporations as
information is becoming increasingly important in a company’s decision-making
process. As the basis of information, data is now considered a valuable,
intangible asset that requires professional management. The CDO is responsible
for enterprise-wide data management, including business intelligence, data
integration, data processing, and data analytics. CDOs generally report directly
to the chief executive officer and to the chief technology officer.
For the new CDO in San Francisco, major duties include promoting the
importance of open data through cloud and simplifying the city's information
technology infrastructure to pursue better data processing and sharing.
Similarly to other executive positions, the CDO must be prepared to face
challenges within the corporate sphere. Jane Griffin, principal of Deloitte
Consulting, highlights numerous challenges that CDOs encounter throughout
their careers:
1. CDOs not only have to possess IT skills, business knowledge, and people
skills, they also need to find a balance among the three sets of skills to be able to
leverage these skills to effectively manage enterprise data
2. There are obstacles in communicating the value of data in the decision
making process to the executive board
3. Although enterprise data is a highly valuable asset to organizations, the costs
associated with acquiring the right data accurately are also significant. "Does my
company need SAP HANA because it is valuable, or merely because it is
fancy?" - It is a hot topic in every SAP SAPPHIRE since the release of SAP
HANA, and it has always been a challenging question for CDOs
4. Since the eventual goal of data management is to make decisions, CDOs face
challenges in interpreting the data and converting them into actionable
information
As challenging as the CDO position may seem, the position is ideal for
those who want to manage data, coordinate with executives, and take part in an
increasingly influential role within a corporation.
Although the Federal Reserve had been pumping money at the rate of about $85
billion into the system, the Fed is planning to reduce the monthly stimulus it
provides to the markets by their massive bond-buying scheme. Asian currencies
fear a possible knee-jerk reaction looking at the QE tapering option from the
Federal Reserve.
Why:
• The possible dip on Asian currencies and markets could be driven by both
sentimental and economic factors.
• The general outlook of the Investor would be based on the belief that the
American markets are becoming stronger. Hence, the Investor shall take
money out of emerging markets and invest in stronger economies - sending the
equity markets of Asia into a tizzy.
• Meanwhile, the dollar supply would tend to decrease, meaning the dollar
would become stronger with respect to other currencies. There is less supply
and more demand as a big chunk of trade is in USD.
While the Fed chairman has previously alluded to possible easing, markets across
the globe took a hit. However, the rumors afloat and analysts across the board
remain convinced that the Federal Reserve will start their program within the end
of this month.
