This document outlines the goals and structure of the "Real Times" qualitative longitudinal study examining third sector organizations over time. The study will follow 16 core cases and their environments longitudinally over 5 years. Four cases of particular interest for exploring grassroots organizations are highlighted: (1) a community center in a deprived urban area in the North, (2) a resource center serving a multi-cultural community in the Midlands, (3) a relatively deprived village community in the North, and (4) a relatively affluent village community in the South West. The study aims to understand the fortunes, strategies, challenges, and perceptions of performance for these organizations as their circumstances change over the years.
