Buddy Bench Strategies
NORTH AUGUSTA ELEMENTARY
2014 - 201 5
What is a Buddy Bench?
 The buddy bench is a special place on the playground
that all students should know about!
 The goal of the buddy bench is to
 help create friendships
 Eliminate loneliness during recess
How do you use the Buddy Bench?
 It is not a place to sit and play with friends or
playground equipment
 It is a place you go when you are feeling lonely or left
out.
Strategy: Before using the Buddy Bench
 Have a plan for what you want to do during recess.
 Look around and see if there is anyone doing the
same thing you want to do.
 Go to that person or group.
 Smile and say something nice! Try to join the fun!
Strategy: Think of a Plan
 If that doesn’t work, go to the Buddy Bench.
 Rest and think about what you would like to do.
 You can be positive while on the Buddy Bench by
thinking about a plan to have fun.
Strategy: Look for fun to join
 Look around at the activities going on during recess
 If you see something you are interested in or
someone you would like to play with:
 Get off the bench
 Go join the fun
 Ask if they would
like to walk, talk, or play
Strategy: Sit and wait for a friend
 When a person ask you to play, go play with them!
 If you choose to sit on the bench and wait for a
friend, you must say “Yes” to the friend that invites
you to play.
Buddy Bench Strategy: Adult Help
 If you are on the Buddy Bench and no one invites
you to play, an adult will try to help!
 The adult may help you:
 Create a plan for friends and activities to join
 Find a “Buddy” for you to talk, walk, or play with
Strategy: If you see someone on the Buddy
Bench
 When you are playing at recess
 Look around often to see if there is someone on the Buddy
Bench
 Invite them to play with you!
 This shows that you care
about others!
 This will make you and
that person feel good about yourselves.
Growing Friendships
 If you used the Buddy Bench one day, try playing
with those same friends more than once.
 Keep those friends by inviting them to play often!
 The Buddy Bench should not be used by the same
person every day. Remember to use your strategies!
