A silversmith named Demetrius organized a guild of craftsmen who made silver shrines of Artemis in Ephesus. Demetrius was concerned that the apostle Paul was convincing people that man-made gods were not real gods, which threatened the craftsmen's livelihoods dependent on the worship of Artemis. Demetrius stirred up the craftsmen, who began shouting "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians" and caused an uproar in the city.
