Building Better Roads
An idea requiring validation
Roads
• We use roads for transportation
• Roads are made on land and rest on soil
• Good roads last longer and facilitate fast movement
• Bad roads cause inconveniences , slowdown movement and create
possibility of accidents
• Pot holes occurring soon after a new road has been built is a sign of poor
quality road
• If the frequency of occurrency of potholes is high, then road quality is bad
• If small pot holes are becoming larger at a fast rate, then road quality is
bad
Preparation for assessing road quality
• Store soils and road building materials of different types
• Store trolley with capacity to hold different weights and which can move at different
speeds
• Setup of quality testing lab and place experts with statistical knowledge
• Create blocks of 10 m X 10 m X 10 m to be placed in the laboratory setup
• On top of each block , put provisions for getting light and water. The roof and one wall
could be of sliding type for availing natural sunlight and air . The roof to have have
inbuilt water sprayers and artificial light .
• Also there is to be a sliding wall one side for movement of personnel and working with
natural air . Variable speed air blowers to be put side walls.
• Setup facilities for easy recording of road conditions throughout the different tests of
light, wind, water and load
• Providing crane to lift a block from testing room and replacing it with another empty
block after testing
• Providing sensors on sides of the blocks
Testing for road quality
• Preparing for the experiments
• Types of soil to be used
• Type of road to be build
• Wind speeds to be considered
• Intensity of rains and water logging depth to be considered
• Different surface area of trolley
• Different loads to be tested through trolley
• Different speed ranges
• Categorisation of pot hole as per surface area
• Categorisation of pot holes as per depth
• Time blocks such as 30 mins, 1 hr, 2 hr,….100 hrs for assessing usability
Testing for road quality
• Doing the experiments
• Capturing data on conditions and their effects
• Putting results in database
• Planning for roads (new and repair)
• Place data on minimum road quality and other requirements and the software
suggests the composition
• Test as per the proposed composition on a new block and validate
• Testing an existing road
• Note down details about existing road surface and other characteristics
• Software will provide possible conditions that lead to this state
• Compare results that are associated with the material of road and soil taken from
site to understand the conditions assumed while building the road
