Building Diabetes
Program in our Facilities
Prof Debdas Mukhopadhyay PDG
MS, FRCS (Edin)
Lions and Diabetes
• According to WHO, over 422 million people have diabetes, that is
expected to affect over 642 million by 2040.
• Lions and Diabetes Awareness: With these statistics and concerns in
mind, Lions have taken action through the Diabetes program.
• Our work supports diabetes awareness, education, prevention,
detection, control, and research.
• Organizations that support Lions in their efforts include:
• The World Health Organization
• Diabetes Education and Camping Association
• International Diabetes Federation (IDF)
Lions International is Ready
We are ready
•Diabetic Chairperson:
•Diabetes Resources For Club Awareness and Education
For Community Awareness and Education
•Diabetes Partnerships and Organizations
• Diabetes Education and Camping Association (DECA)
• International Diabetes Federation (IDF)
• MedicAlert Foundation
• National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) - USA
• National Eye Institute / National Eye Health Education Program (NEI/NEHEP)
• World Health Organization (WHO)
our Facilities:
mean Lions Eye Care Facilities
•Vision Centres: Manned by Optometrists
•Lions Eye Hospitals: Can be considered as
Secondary Centres
•Eye Hospitals of Excellence: Can be considered
as Tertiary Centres
At Vision Centre Level:
• No preliminary screening should be done there.
• Optometrist will ask just three or four questions to the patients:
Do you have diabetes? If the answer is yes
How long you are diabetic
Who takes care of your diabetes?
Have you ever been told that diabetes may make you blind?
• Then refer the patient to next level of Eye Care
To develop this facility at our vision centres does
cost nothing
At Next Level:
• We have already established Hospitals with Qualified
Ophthalmologists and Staffs
• They just need necessary orientation and training to take care of
Diabetic Blindness
• Basic instruments are available (SL, 90D etc)
• Fundus photographic instruments are easily available.
• Availability of OCT and Retinal Laser at this level would help Tertiary
Centres
At Super speciality Level
• VR Surgery
• Rehabilitation
• Planning
• Audit
• Replanning
We are ready to cook “Fish”
But who will catch the fish?!!
• Lions has already planned nicely about these.
• Each member can play a vital role individually to spread the message
• Lions boast of having highest number of Doctor Membership.
• Each doctor member through his professional association can build
the awareness a lot.
• Ophthalmologists at secondary and tertiary centre are like good cooks
but without fish to cook.
• So these cooks must sail to catch the fish.
My Humble Submission
• I enjoy / suffer a unique situation
• I am a Lion and Past District Governor
• I am Ophthalmologists
• I have lot of General Physicians Friends
• But also I see a huge number of patients untreated.
