Making Connections
Perseverance
Persistence
Patience
Making Connections
Research your community, not people.
Self-Reflection
Does your library already work with your local school district in some way?
What type of community does your library serve?
Are you in position to make connections with your school district or could you help
mentor someone in your library department to pursue school connections?
Making Connections
Is your mission relevant to your
community’s needs?

Building Effective Relationships with Schools: Part 1 (April 2017)

Editor's Notes

  • #3: That childhood picture--I placed there was to show an example of my general excitement level has been off the charts since birth. That building is where I spent most of my time---and not reading. Reading I did at home. My mom had me volunteer there from age 9---so early on I got to see behind the scenes.
  • #4: Schools and Libraries the way they work---not just the image they represent have been a part of me all my life. Not just the shiny “it houses books and I love to read” but the real drama behind it with budgets, people, being able to handle multiple tasks...
  • #5: The Three P’s
  • #6: It is not always about the people with the most power. It is about people with the most passion.
  • #7: Use the chat box to answer. If someone has a partnership with a similar community---ask what happened to help get their partnership started.
  • #8: After this spiel---breakout into asking the question---when was the last time you talked with someone in your community and you weren't bad mouthing the dysfunction of your job? If you already do that and you’re in a managerial role---how do you encourage frontline staff to not do so.
  • #9: Schools and Libraries the way they work---not just the image they represent have been a part of me all my life.
  • #14: One Book, One City & The Mayor’s Book Club was added the following year. One Book, One City has evolved & the Mayor’s Book Club retired. We have now replaced it with the Summer Reading Program, which we distribute to every kid in the city and in our own SRC pamphlets are attached reading book lists.
  • #16: We track monthly database usage. How many people have log-in daily (tally monthly) to our databases using their grps logins. We track how many library cards were registerd at open house school events. We would do student and teacher training attendance. Usually our database logins would correlate to the months we trained in---and suprisingly have retained fairly well. You can always see a spike in database usage during research heavy months March-May and can see slight drop during late fall early winter and definitely summer months . [Much to the dismay of the summer school teachers]. Impact----further discuss
  • #17: What is your organizational culture? How do you maximize team efforts? Will everyone work across the departments to achieve a goal. How do you gain everyone’s buy in---especially people who do not think you are really doing anything.
  • #18: What is your organizational culture? How do you maximize team efforts? Will everyone work across the departments to achieve a goal. How do you gain everyone’s buy in---especially people who do not think you are really doing anything.
  • #19: Start reinventing your library’s story to the community | Willingness to listen to your partner's needs | Willingness to think and try something that isn’t necessarily normal---willingness to embrace the chaos and uncertainty
