Merging Quantitative and Qualitative Approaches
for Deeper Understanding
WHY MIXED METHODS?
Mixed Methods Research
integrates both qualitative and
quantitative data to offer a fuller,
richer understanding of research
problems.
This approach bridges the gap
between the numerical insights
and the human experience.
WHAT IS MIXED METHODS RESEARCH?
Mixed Methods Research combines both
qualitative and quantitative research
techniques, approaches, concepts, or
language into a single study.
Key Components:
Qualitative: Understanding depth and
context.
Quantitative: Understanding scale and
generalisability.
CORE DESIGNS
• Explanatory Sequential Design:
Collecting quantitative data first,
followed by qualitative data to
explain results.
• Exploratory Sequential Design:
Qualitative data collection first,
followed by quantitative to test
initial findings.
• Convergent Design: Collecting
qualitative and quantitative data
separately, then merging them to
compare results.
PRACTICAL ILLUSTRATION – COMBINING TWO
LENSES
Scenario:
Imagine you're studying the impact of a
new teaching method.
Quantitative: Surveys with students to
gather performance scores.
Qualitative: In-depth interviews with
students and teachers to explore
feelings, opinions, and insights on the
method.
QUANTITATIVE QUALITATIVE
Advantages of Mixed Methods
Research
• Provides a fuller, more nuanced
understanding.
• Helps cross-validate and
corroborate data.
• Offers flexibility to explore
complex research questions.
• Bridges the gap between
statistics and human stories.
• Statistical
rigor
• Generalizabilit
y
• Objectivity
• Measurable
data
• Replicability
• In-depth
understanding
• Contextual insight
• Subjectivity
• Rich descriptions
• Flexibility in data
collection
• Insight
generation
• Informing
decision-
making
• Reliability

PRACTICAL EXAMPLE: HEALTHCARE
STUDY
A study on patient satisfaction with
telemedicine during a pandemic
Quantitative: Surveying 1,000 patients on
satisfaction levels.
Qualitative: Conducting interviews with 20
patients about their experiences.
Outcome: Data on both numerical
satisfaction rates and personal patient
experiences.
HOW TO CONDUCT MIXED
METHODS RESEARCH?
1. Define your research problem: Identify questions that benefit from
both methods.
2. Design your study: Choose a mixed methods design (e.g.,
convergent or sequential).
3. Collect data: Ensure that both quantitative and qualitative data are
collected effectively.
4. Analyze data: Use appropriate methods for each data type (e.g.,
statistical analysis for quantitative; thematic analysis for qualitative).
5. Integrate findings: Compare and synthesize results for a
comprehensive understanding.
Step-by-Step Guide:
CONSIDERATIONS AND CHALLENGES
Time and resource-intensive.
Requires expertise in both
qualitative and quantitative
methods.
Integrating findings can be
complex.
DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS TOOLS
Surveys and Questionnaires: For
quantitative data collection.
Interviews and Focus Groups: For
qualitative insights.
Software: NVivo for qualitative
analysis, SPSS for quantitative.
Tools:
REAL-WORLD IMPACT OF MIXED
METHODS RESEARCH
Educational Research: Improving
classroom teaching by
understanding both test scores
and student perceptions.
Public Health: Studying
vaccination uptake by collecting
statistics on rates and conducting
interviews on barriers to access.
Case Study 1: Case Study 2:
UNLOCKING THE POWER OF MIXED
METHODS
• Combines the strengths of
qualitative and quantitative
research.
• Offers richer, more
comprehensive insights.
• Facilitates deeper understanding
and practical solutions.
BUILDING INSIGHTS THROUGH MIXED
METHODS
Mixed Methods Research allows us to see the
whole picture—bringing together the rigor of
numbers and the depth of human experience.
It’s not just about answers but understanding.
