Glass fibers are made from silica-based compositions and are versatile industrial materials. They are produced by rapidly drawing molten glass through bushings to form thin filaments, which are gathered into strands. Nearly all continuous glass fibers are made using a direct draw process. General purpose E-glass fibers account for over 90% of glass fibers and are used in composites, boards, and other products due to their useful properties like strength and stiffness. Special purpose fibers include S-glass, D-glass, and silica fibers which have enhanced properties for specialized applications.
