CHARACTERISTICS
AND PURPOSE OF THE
INTELLECT AND WILL
PROCESSING OF
UNDERSTANDING
Humans are gifted with the ability to think and decide—two
abilities that give them unique characteristics compared to
other creatures. These abilities are represented by the
intellect (mind) and the will, both of which are essential in
understanding and fulfilling our goals and aspirations in life.
Through the intellect and the will, our personal development
and ability to make meaningful decisions become possible.
2
Let us remember that the ultimate goal of the
intellect is the truth, which we should always
consider. There are many situations where we easily
form wrong assumptions. This happens because we
do not fully understand something, or we lack
sufficient information about a particular event or
situation.
3
Thus, we can only discover the
truth through continuous research
and inquiry. Additionally, we
should use our human senses
such as sight, hearing, smell, taste,
and touch. All these senses
connect and provide a complete
idea through our intellect.
4
This process is based on
the influence that comes from
our thinking. Because of this, a
person has the capacity to do
what is right or wrong. The
purpose of the will is
goodness. The will does not
5
• A person uses the intellect to understand the
events happening in their surroundings. It
becomes the foundation for recognizing
others, with the ultimate goal of
understanding the truth.
• Meanwhile, the will is directed toward
goodness. It is the ability of a person to make
their own decisions and to carry them out. It is
used to act or do things with the intention of
achieving what is good. The will is responsible
for making an individual accountable for their
actions because it inherently opposes the idea
of evil.

• Ang isip at kilos-loob ng tao ay may
tunguhing katotohanan at
kabutihan.Dahil dito, nagkaroon tayo
ng mas mataas na antas kumpara sa
hayop na pinangingibabawan lamang
ng kanilang instincts. Ang ating isip at
kilos-loob ang gagabay sa atin upang
maging makatao sa bawat kilos natin
sa araw-araw. Sa pamamagitan ng isip,
nagagawa nating mag-isip nang
lohikal, mapanlikha, at mapagpasiya.
7
Sa pamamagitan naman ng kilos-
loob, nagagawa nating kumilos nang
may pagmamahal, katarungan, at
kapayapaan. Ang pagkakaroon ng
harmonya sa pagitan ng isip at kilos-loob
ay nagsisiguro na ang bawat desisyon at
aksyon natin ay nakatuon sa ikabubuti
ng ating sarili at ng ating kapwa.

1. What are the characteristics and purpose of
the intellect (mind) and will?
2. What is the difference and function of the
intellect and will?
3. How are the intellect and will used in daily
activities?

Instructions: Using the Think-Pair-Share strategy, carefully
read and understand the situations provided. Discuss your
answers with your partner. Use the questions listed below as
your guide.
• You are very excited for the opening of classes. Your school
supplies are ready, and you can’t wait to meet your new
classmates. However, on the very first day of class, one of
your classmates refuses to let you sit in the empty chair near
them, saying it is reserved for their bag and other
belongings. What will you do?
• When you got home from school, you saw a pile of dirty
dishes in the kitchen. It is your older sister’s responsibility to
wash them, but she hasn’t come home yet. You want to help
and do her responsibility, but your hand is swollen. In just a
little while, your parents will be home, and they will surely
be upset if the dishes are not washed. What will you do?
CHARACTERISTICS
AND PURPOSE OF THE
INTELLECT AND WILL
THE ROLE OF THE
INTELLECT AND WILL IN
PERSONAL DECISION-
MAKING
WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF
USING THE INTELLECT AND
WILL IN DECISION-MAKING?
13
Humans are unique among all of God's
creations. Humans possess intellect to be used
for understanding and discovering the truth.
Through the intellect, a person seeks the truth;
that is why one continuously explores and
searches to understand and act according to the
discovered truth.
The will is the power to decide, choose, and carry
out one’s chosen action. According to Saint
Thomas Aquinas, the will is a rational appetency,
meaning it is a faculty that desires what is good
14
The will depends on the information
provided by the intellect. Therefore, the will is
influenced by the intellect. Because of the will, a
person can choose to do what is good. The
function of the will is to act or to do. When a
person uses their ability to choose and do what is
right, they demonstrate responsible and
accountable action. The ultimate goal of the will
is goodness. The will does not incline toward evil;
therefore, its only true direction is toward
goodness. Every time a person does good, it is
15
The use of our intellect and will helps us because
we use them to ensure that our decisions and
actions are correct and appropriate through
careful analysis and decision-making, so that we
do not regret them in the end. In using our
intellect and will, we must have discipline and self-
confidence to make sure that our actions and
decisions are right.
Additionally, we should also know how to control
our emotions and feelings. That is why before we
do something, we must be determined, so that it
will contribute to our growth as a person.
16
The use of the intellect and will in personal
decision-making and action serves as a guide in
choosing and acting according to truth and
goodness. The intellect and will are what set
humans apart from other creatures.
17
The proper use of our intellect helps us in the
following ways:
a. Our intellect controls our entire body; it has the
ability to think, decide, and make choices for our
life. In connection with the will, the intellect
guides a person to act and move toward what is
good.
18
• Our intellect controls everything — all our
decisions and choices. It guides us to think
about whether something is right or wrong. We
also use it to deeply understand and reflect on
the decisions and choices we make in life.
• It is important to always evaluate every decision
using our intellect, together with our will, in
order to make the right choices that will bring
us happiness and help us understand that what
we are doing and will do leads to the good of
others.
19
The proper use of our will helps us:
a. The will refers to the ability to perform an
action or task according to what our mind
desires. It is what decides or determines to do
whatever we desire.
b. Our will has the ability and power to freely
choose our desires without anyone
commanding or dictating us.
20
c. The will guides us to think about whether our
actions and decisions are right or wrong.
d. We use our will to deeply understand and
reflect on the decisions and choices we make in
life.
e. The will also guides us toward making the right
decisions that will bring us happiness and help us
understand that our actions and choices are
correct.

• Instructions: every day, we face situations where we
need to make decisions — from the smallest to the
biggest things. In making decisions, we should
always think about their effects on ourselves and
others.
• Give one example of a decision you might face in a

HUMAN DIGNITY AS
THE FOUNDATION OF
RESPECT FOR ONESELF,
FAMILY, AND OTHERS
27
The word DIGNITY comes
from the Latin word dignitas,
which means value or worth. It
is an important word that
reminds us of our worth as
human beings. Every human life
has equal value and equal
dignity.
The original meaning of the word
dignity implied that a person deserves
respect because of their status. However, it
was later given a broader concept by the
United Nations (UN) through the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
This is an important document that
outlines the human rights of every
individual, covering all aspects of human
life.
Article 1 states: “All human beings are
born free and equal in dignity and rights.
They are endowed with reason and
conscience and should act towards one
another in a spirit of brotherhood.”
This clearly expresses that dignity is
not based on a person’s status, class, or
other privileges. It is inherent in every
individual from the moment of birth.
According to Atty. Jacqueline Ann
de Guia, spokesperson of the
Commission on Human Rights (CHR), it
is part of the government's
responsibility to ensure that all citizens
— regardless of their gender,
economic status, religion, or political
beliefs — are given adequate
protection against injustice and
violations of human dignity.
According to the study of Brady
(2021) entitled “The Evolution of Human
Dignity in Catholic Morality”, dignity,
according to St. Thomas Aquinas,
refers to the value of a person or thing
that is not only based on their
usefulness (utility) to others, but also
on their own inherent goodness.
The Catholic social teaching
principle of human dignity is
about understanding that each of us is
made in God's image. Every person
has an innate human dignity no one
can take away. Human dignity is given
freely to all human beings; whether
saint or sinner, imprisoned or freed,
powerful or marginalized.
In developing our own dignity, we
show our understanding and
acceptance of ourselves as individuals.
This reflects our self-worth, our
acceptance of both our strengths and
weaknesses, and our decision to do
good without compromising the
dignity of others.
Recognizing the dignity of the
family reflects the value and respect
given to each member of our family. It
shows love, support, and
understanding of their needs and
desires.
Through respect and acceptance
of one another within the family, a
strong and harmonious relationship is
built.
Recognizing the dignity of others
reflects treating everyone equally. This
is shown through respect, acceptance,
and support for their needs and
desires. In this way, relationships grow
stronger, and a more progressive and
just society is built.
In simple terms, dignity should be
inherent in every person. It is not
something that needs to be given or
granted by others, but a quality that
each individual naturally possesses as
a human being.
Instructions: Answer the question:
“How is dignity shown to oneself, others,
and the family?” Use the graphic
organizer as your guide. Write your
answers inside the boxes provided.

They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.” This clearly expresses that dignity is not based on a person’s status, class, or other privileges. It is inherent in every individual from the moment of birth.
  • 30. According to Atty. Jacqueline Ann de Guia, spokesperson of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR), it is part of the government's responsibility to ensure that all citizens — regardless of their gender, economic status, religion, or political beliefs — are given adequate protection against injustice and violations of human dignity.
  • 31. According to the study of Brady (2021) entitled “The Evolution of Human Dignity in Catholic Morality”, dignity, according to St. Thomas Aquinas, refers to the value of a person or thing that is not only based on their usefulness (utility) to others, but also on their own inherent goodness.
  • 32. The Catholic social teaching principle of human dignity is about understanding that each of us is made in God's image. Every person has an innate human dignity no one can take away. Human dignity is given freely to all human beings; whether saint or sinner, imprisoned or freed, powerful or marginalized.
  • 33. In developing our own dignity, we show our understanding and acceptance of ourselves as individuals. This reflects our self-worth, our acceptance of both our strengths and weaknesses, and our decision to do good without compromising the dignity of others.
  • 34. Recognizing the dignity of the family reflects the value and respect given to each member of our family. It shows love, support, and understanding of their needs and desires. Through respect and acceptance of one another within the family, a strong and harmonious relationship is built.
  • 35. Recognizing the dignity of others reflects treating everyone equally. This is shown through respect, acceptance, and support for their needs and desires. In this way, relationships grow stronger, and a more progressive and just society is built.
  • 36. In simple terms, dignity should be inherent in every person. It is not something that needs to be given or granted by others, but a quality that each individual naturally possesses as a human being.
