Cabbagetown is a historic neighborhood in Toronto, Canada that is known for its preserved Victorian housing. It gained its name from Irish immigrants who settled there in the late 1840s and were so poor they grew cabbage in their front yards. Through the late 19th century, Cabbagetown became home to the working class Irish and houses were built in the Victorian style. After World War II, much of the original housing was razed and replaced with housing projects, though the remaining northern section was spared from similar redevelopment in the 1970s.
