Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) is a digital tool used to design and draft blueprints for mechanical parts, buildings, and other structures. CAD was first developed by the US Air Force in the 1950s and tools for manufacturing were created in the 1980s. Popular CAD programs today include AutoCAD for 2D drawings, 3ds Max for 3D rendering, Revit for architectural plans, and SolidWorks to design objects in 3D and output 2D drawings. The CAD process involves an engineer sketching a design, a specialist creating a digital CAD file with dimensions, and a factory using the blueprint to manufacture the physical part.
