Hundreds of migrants are feared to have drowned after a boat carrying around 700 people capsized in the Mediterranean Sea near the Italian island of Lampedusa. So far only 28 people have been rescued while 24 bodies have been retrieved. Italy's Prime Minister called it a European tragedy and called for an extraordinary EU summit to address the migrant crisis. Over 1,600 people have died trying to cross the Mediterranean so far this year, and 3,500 died attempting the crossing last year. Major politicians have differing views on how to address the issue, with some calling for increased rescue operations and others wanting to restrict rescue missions to deter crossings.
