What is Social Architecture?
Social Architecture is the intentional design of
social spaces that enable the collective potential of a
team, an organization or a community.

An active
intervention…

scripts
… to enable safe
development
We cannot
‘not be in a space’
Georges Perec
Espèces d’espaces
“Vivre, c’est passer d’un
espace à un autre, en
essayant le plus possible à
ne pas se cogner.”
“To live is to move from one space to another,
trying as much as possible not to hurt yourself.”

Each space is scripted
This is a
social
script
This is also a
social script
And this as well
And this as well
Notice how each
separate
conversation on
your smartphone is
a different social
script.
We belong to multiple social scripts
Robert Sapolsky – Stanford University
Behave: The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst
As a species we are unique in
that we belong to multiple
hierarchies and that we are
fantastically attuned to status
differences.
We belong to multiple social scripts
… and our human
brains are perfectly
wired to make sense
status differences
and kinship in each
context.
Matrix shifts: nature’s blueprint for human
development
Joseph Chilton Pearce
The Magical Child
Each matrix is a source of possibility, a
source of energy to explore that
possibility, and a safe place within
which that exploration can take place.

Nature’s blueprint for human
development provides for several
matrix shifts: from the womb to
the mother to the earth (an ever-
widening circle of the terrain
surrounding the mother) to the
self (becoming one’s own matrix)
to increasingly abstract matrices
of higher consciousness.

Shaping social spaces
Understanding the
components of a social
spaces helps us to actively
shape them:
• Membership  Roles
• Influence  Authorship
(and though it: dignity)
• Reinforcement  Autonomy
(Peter Block: 6 elements of a powerful invitation)
• Shared Journey  Narrative constuction

Authenticity: internal resonance
Who I am How I show up
Authenticity
Gabor Maté
The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness and Healing in a Toxic Culture
The quality of being true to
oneself and the capacity to
shape one’s own life from a
deep knowledge of that self.
Knowing our gut feelings
when they arise and honoring
them.

Collective engagement happens here & now
Belonging occurs when we tell others what gifts we received.
When that happens in the present moment, community is built.
Internal resonance:
“It’s safe to be me”
External resonance:
“The space is safe to connect”
Internal resonance:
“It’s safe to be me”
The full spectrum of a Social Architect

Role ambiguity
Robert Sapolsky – Stanford University
Behave: The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst
We find it deeply unsettling, with
the amygdala leading front and
center, when status differences
are ambiguous and shifting.
Fractured communities: 2 types of disconnect
Internal dissonance:
“It’s unsafe to be me”
External dissonance:
“The space is unsafe to connect”
The paradox of Protocol
Autonomy is the road less traveled
• Accountability is the price of joining
• Agency: getting out of the victim role
• Accept that refusal is possible
• No rescuing or persecution
When you are in charge…
When you’re not the boss…
The paradox of Accountability
The good news: this
too is a social script!
• You don’t need a complete organization culture to
turn around if you know how to shape a social
space.
• Discover micro-moments of Shakleton in your daily
practice by asking every time you gather people:
How participative do I want this moment to be?
Next: be explicit about the protocol to the group.
• Create micro-moments of Ghandi (“be the
change”) in your daily practice by demonstrating
vulnerability
Response flexibility
Gabor Maté
The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness and Healing in a Toxic Culture
I can choose vulnerability over
victimhood.
Vulnerability is a prerequisite
for development and
resonance

So where do we start?
Amy Edmondson – Harvard Business School
So where do we start? When you are in charge…
When you’re not the boss…
Conclusion: a resonance seeking process
On a napkin
1. If we want to reach sustainable ownership at the end of a change program,
then we need to work on belonging and collective engagement.
2. Belonging occurs when we tell others what gifts we received.
When that happens in the present moment, community is built.
3. But for that to occur, we need to cultivate accountability and provide psychological safety.
4. The good news is that we have biology on our side, because humans are
uniquely wired to belong to multiple social spaces.
5. Once we understand the components of social spaces, we can start to shape and hold them.
