• Almost half of Australian businesses have experienced cyber attacks in the
last year, a rise of 15 per cent over the previous year.
• According to research by Telstra, the number of attacks in Australia stood
above the global average by roughly 10 per cent and marginally higher
than the Asia Pacfic average of 45 per cent.
• Almost 90 per cent of these claimed their security breaches went
undetected, a rise of 12 per cent since 2018.
• web application attacks and incidents caused by employee human error
accounted for 38 and 37 per cent respectively of businesses that had
reported a security incident
• Gartner expects increased growth for the infrastructure software segment
in the near-term, particularly in integration platform as a service (iPaaS)
and application platform as a service (aPaaS).

Opportunities
2018 outlook
Source: AUSTRALIA’S CYBER SECURITY SECTOR COMPETITIVENESS PLAN 2019 UPDATE, AustCyber
• Cyber security in Australia employs around 20,500 people
• Total expenditure is A$5.0 billion in 2018
• A$3.9 billion spent on external cyber security 2018
• A$1 billion on their internal cyber security functions in 2018
• Small but fast-growing sector
• From 2018 to 2026, external cyber security spending in Australia is likely to
increase more than twice as fast (7.9 per cent annual growth) as broader
IT
• Australia may need almost 17,000 additional cyber security
workers by 2026 for the sector to harness its full growth potential.
• It is expected that the number of cyber graduates could quadruple from
around 500 per year in 2017 to about 2,000 a year in 2026,
• This still leaves a significant shortfall of workers in the medium-term.

work is performed. Is a NIST framework, NIST Special Publication 800-181
Recommended for application in the public, private, and academic sectors
Describes:
• Categories (7): A high-level grouping of common cyber security functions.
