A Software Engineer is an Engineer who applies the principal of software engineering to the design, development, testing & evaluation of the software & systems that makes the compute or anything containing software such as computer chips, work etc. In 1987, Imperial College London introduced the first 3- year software engineering Bachelor's degree in the UK and the world. In the following year, the University of Sheffield established a similar program. In 1997, PSG Collage of Technology in the Coimbatore, India was the first to start a five year integrated Master of Science degree in Software Engineering. Most Software engineers work as employees or contractors. Software engineers work with businesses, govt. agencies and non- profit organizations. Some software engineers work for themselves as freelancers. Some organizations have specialists to perform each of the tasks in the software development process. The ACM had a professional certification program in the early 1980’s which was discontinued due to lack of interest. As of 2006, the IEEE had certified over 575 software professionals. There are several prizes in this field, The CODIE awards, JOLT awards, STEVENS award etc.
