This document discusses applying Normalization Process Theory (NPT) to explain large-scale agile transformations. NPT focuses on how new practices become routinely embedded and sustained over time. The document argues that research on large-scale agile transformations has made assumptions that need re-examining and has focused more on adherence to methods rather than sustainability. NPT could help explain the dynamic process of normalizing large-scale agile transformations by examining how practices are embedded and sustained in complex environments over time. An initial case study is presented along with plans for future research applying NPT to better understand large-scale agile transformations.
