Objective: 1. Culture- The USA in numbers
Level of culture: Three levels of culture for pre-intermediate students
1. Read and listen a text about the USA: Facts and Figures
2. To answer questions about the culture of their country.
3. Talk about facts and figures with reference to a country in the European Union.
Skills: Reading, Listening and Speaking
Warm Up
Ask students what they know about the USA
Elicit some ideas, then ask: How big do you think it is? How many people do you think live there? What
do you think the weather is like?
Elicit some answers, but do not confirm or reject any at this stage.
Presentation
Tell students they are going to learn about the USA. Present the text and its background to students.
Practice
• Exercise 1
Students read the text and complete it with numbers.
Students read and listen, and check their answer
• Exercise 2
Students read the text again and answer the questions. They can compare answers with a partner
before I check with the class.
• Exercise 3 – Your culture.
Students work in pairs to ask and answer the questions about their country. They can plan their
answers then ask and answer the questions in pairs. Students may like to use reference books if they
need extra information. Alternatively, students could prepare written answers.
Task Students find out about a country in the European Union and complete the table. Then design a
tourist information poster and present the information to the class. Read the task and the instructions
with the class. Students choose a country and together find out the information. Encourage them to
organize their work into paragraphs. Remind students to decorate their work with photos or pictures.
Learning Situation: Learning through culture.
Key Words: facts, figures, country, size, geographical location, typical weather, population, languages,
food, clothes, the future.
Closure. Get students feedback by brainstorming ideas about culture in different countries they read
and presented. Praise them all!
Note: All levels of culture are involved in this activity: source culture- talking about the culture of their
country, target culture- reading and speaking about the United States, and international culture-
presenting the culture of another r English-speaking country.
