 METHOD: a procedure or process for attaining an object: as systematic procedure,
techniques or mode of inquiry, or a way , technique or process of or for doing
something.
 Common Elements: Interpretations, planning, and implementing
 the simple multiplicity or variety of methods in the Catechetical ministry is not a
problem. Rather the variety of methods is a sign of life and richness, showing respect
for those being catechized, as long as the variety is useful and not harmful to the unity
of the one Faith.
 any Catechetical method is dependent, albeit partly, on the competence of the
Catechist using it for its effectiveness.
 Catechist plays a decisive role in discerning and choosing a certain method and
putting it into practice.
 between various possible methodologies and the actual use of one, the practical
“wisdom” and “creativity” of the Catechist is the determining key.
 it’s the catechist who makes the decision in the “here and now” about how the Good
News most effectively be communicated in the concrete situation of those being
catechized.
 With flexibility, the catechist chooses from a variety of techniques in the class
procedure; the question, the pantomime, the demonstration, the drama, the story
telling, the use of slides, or films, charts, or pictures, outlines, action songs.
 All methods can be useful but it is the catechist that judges and makes the practical
decision.

 Basic Problem of Catechetical and Methodology: Achieving the proper balance
between the God-inspired content (Revelation) to be proclaimed/ communicated, and
the method chosen for this proclamation in the specific context of the catechesis.
1. the Effectivity of any methodology depends on its intelligent use.
Catechist must be trained , for example in how to carry on an experiential catechesis by
drawing out and exemplifying their lessons- the Christian meanings and values.
2. there is no single best method of categorizing
This true both by reason of those being catechized, as well as from the perspective of
the “Good News” itself.
3. Despite this plurality of methodologies, can be offered: every adequate catechetical
methodology must be grounded explicitly of three basis: Scripture, Tradition, and
Human Experience.
Without Scripture, there is no Christian Message, without Tradition, there is no
Christian Community, incarnating and passing on the living word of God. Without
Human Experience in its full sweep-personal, interpersonal, societal, cosmic, and
transcendent-there are no hearer of the Message
4. The forth directive focuses on the Total Catechetical environment.
the operational selectivity of every Catechetical method depends in great part on the
Socio-Religious and Socio-Cultural contexts of the Catechesis.
5. The fifth directive is: All catechetical methods gain their efficacy ultimately only
through the Work of the Holy Spirit.
